Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

have a fibre optic broadband connection 25mb, usually on speedtest it comes out at 25mb download, but just now its hardly at 1mb!!!

but the upload remains the same at 3mb!

Clever worded contracts mean they can get away with it. They advertise certain insanely high download speeds from selected content providers (Akamai, Fubbacudden, Netflix) on certain good days meanwhile your upload speed is terrible and unselected content providers are left out in the dry. There is no sizeable "net neutrality" movement in Europe either so they get away with sh1t. Ports are probably blocked and non-HTTP protocols such as bittorrent could be throttled as well

Sounds like a case of RTFM.

yeah I know, and like I say usually it is the full 25mb, but on peak weekend times its horrific! 4% of the speed of most other times

Have you tried switching it off and on again?

The speeds are always 'Up to XXmb' for all of the general consumer level stuff. You are sharing bandwidth with your neighbors. The price you pay/the speeds they advertise can't work if everyone is utilizing the network at their cap.

It sucks - but it's what you pay for.

You could pay *a lot* more to get your own line and be unaffected by your neighbours; but you're still going to deal with traffic when you go to any site.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,830 ✭✭✭✭Taltos

contention rate is usually hidden away in the contract - how many other users you share your line with.

Some advertise zero contention - I think magnet might be one.
Eircom depending on the package might be 24 or 48, and UPC is something similar - but I am pulling these numbers from shady memory so just do a quick google check on them.

One thing to look into is can you switch service to another provider using the same tech - that way you might keep the max speed but now get a dedicated line with lower or no contention.

They can't really do that anymore, there is no standard bittorrent port. utorrent for example gives you a random one.

Im guessing the higher speeds say 100mb will have the same problem but instead of 1mb it will be absolute minimum 4mb, and probably higher because less can afford/justify the higher prices with those speeds?

A 25mb connection will only download at 2.5mbps maximum.

50 meg will DL 5mbps max.

    That's normal.

Basically you divide it by 10.

    RESET your modem..

I take it it's upc you are using. There is no contention rate on upc..

did but it was to late..

just sounds like you need to reset the modem.

    You probably tried that tho..

    Just call them then...

There is a hard reset option. Little hole in the back of the modem, stick a match in there for 3 seconds to reset.. worth a shot.

I'm just being cheeky really. :P
I'd considered switching to UPC, but reading experiences like yours put me right off it. I only have 5Mb with Smart, but it's solid as a rock 24/7.

His upload isn't up or down but his download is down and he wants that re-upped to the previous down speed which he was happy with. His contention, he contends, is not an issue as he dls his shiz from upc.
    k?

What speed test website are you using

If it's speedtest.net what server are you connecting to?

Most people get lied to when they buy their internet connection — they get told it's going to be fast, but it's actually slow.

The OP somehow got lucky & his is fast the whole time. Except today, when it's slow for him too. But he's angry and he complains online — he wants his internet to be fast every day! The people who he's complaining to have no sympathy because their internet is always slow.

    The End

New words this post: Fast, slow, internet

    Ring UPC and complain.
