200km per day - recommend reliable comfort wagon for 5-6K

Hi all,
Long time lurker here.
As the title states, I am putting in the miles every day, mostly straight motorway miles - 80 to 90km each way, plus visits to sites.
Running my poor 10 year old 1.6 petrol ragged at the minute and looking to change before it ups and dies, or calls Childline and reports me.
1.8 or 2.0 diesel are obvious choices, Reliable, auto, would really like comfort though I appreciate my budget is not great.
I should get a work vehicle supplied at some stage in the near future but as there is yet no fixed date on this I would like to consider my options (plan for the worst) - for the next 6 Months at least.
I am thinking Volvo s80, Passat, Avensis.
Can you offer some suggestions as to where I should direct my focus?
I appreciate any advise offered.

Is mpg or tax a consideration? Is auto a must-have?

Auto is not really important, no.
Mpg is, moreso. Poor mpg is going to kill me with those miles.
The numbers I quoted are getting-to-work miles, I don't get fully reimbursed for those so that cost is mostly mine.

You might get a Laguna III in budget

I'd personally go for a merc, even if it means going for an 'older' one, they're just built to do exactly what you're doing with it. Even the 'small' diesel in a C-Class is enough for comfortable motorway driving.

If you can stretch it though, an E-Class would be the way to go comfort-wise: something like this:

I'm doing exactly your mileage in a Saab 93 2.0l petrol. It is very comfortable, leather interior, and nice for longer spins, and I've done 6300miles since I bought it.

MPG is not good, of course, but I bought the car for €900, so I saved money on that side of the books. Have spent €1193 on petrol. Could have saved maybe half of that with a diesel, but was hard to find a cheap diesel that looked reliable.

I'm idly keeping an eye out for diesels, but, this setup is more sustainable than I thought.

if you get a new work car in 6 months, the hassle of buying and selling again and the expense. If its a bastard on juice and mostly motorway, simply give yourself a few more minutes and do 100kmph on motorway...
