Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I doubt it. Airlines usually cancel your remaining flight legs if you skip a flight.

Aegean are usually cheap enough to Athens anyway.

Would you end up on a watchlist if you travelled there? Looks really nice now, watched a documentary on it recently.

I would not think so, but not 100%. My cousin went there in the last year and had a great time. Plenty to see and a good night life and friendly people. He was with a Lebanese girl he knew thou which probably made it easier all round

Edit: also it's not on one of Trumps no go countries !!

My father runs the charity " Lebanon Trust " ( http://www.lebanontrust.org/en/home/ ) and travels there a lot. He'll be very happy about this as more of the funds he raises can go to the kids instead of the airlines.

    Thanks op.

ps, Beirut is class. It used to be known as the Monaco of the east. Also, don't be afraid to look up the charity and the work they do ;)

pps. the Lebanese love the Irish.

The DFA suggests that a high degree of caution be exercised:

    https://www.dfa.ie/travel/travel-advice/a-z-list-of-countries/lebanon/

Would anyone take a small family (2 adults, 2 kids)? Looks like there's lots to see and do there.

That's similar to South Africa? I wonder the same myself. I loved SA.

Not similar at all...read the notice sure

"Irish citizens are advised to exercise a high degree of caution in Lebanon due to heightened political and sectarian tensions and an increased threat of terrorist incidents at this time."

The DFA have the same "high degree of caution" for South Africa, Morocco, Russia and the UAE among others

You might end facing a lot of questions if you subsequently tried to enter Israel on the same passport.

I get your point, but they're similar in that there are only four level of warnings and all these countries are in the second lowest. Granted one mentions terrorism. YMMV with respect to risk appetite.

UK advice is more detailed: https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/lebanon
Notably most of Beirut is red.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all travel to:
    ...
southern suburbs of Beirut defined as: south of the sports stadium and the Adnan Al Hakim road which heads west from the stadium to the Beirut-Saida (Sidon) road - down to the airport. Including the neighbourhoods of Bir Hassan, Ghobeiry, Chuya, Haret Hraik, Burj Al Brajne, Mraije, Er Rouais and Laylake. But excluding the main airport highway, the Beirut-Saida (Sidon) road and west of there to the coast, and the area between the airport highway and the coast south of Abbas El Mousawi Road, including the Golf Club of Lebanon.
    Similar to Australia's advice: http://smartraveller.gov.au/Countries/middle-east/Pages/lebanon.aspx

"high degree of caution" means jack squat from the DFA.

    Many countries carry that designation:

    https://www.dfa.ie/travel/travel-advice/a-z-list-of-countries/france/

    https://www.dfa.ie/travel/travel-advice/a-z-list-of-countries/china/

    https://www.dfa.ie/travel/travel-advice/a-z-list-of-countries/united-arab-emirates/

I recommend people to check the UK's version of government travel advice when looking up countries - understandably as they have more resources it is simply a more informative site than our homegrown version:

Beirut is mostly red and should consider if travel is worthwhile or not

I know nothing about beirut, but would it be fair to say that the area shaded as being Beirut in this map is not subject to that travel advisory?
    https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Beirut,+Lebanon/@33.8809633,35.5088819,14z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x151f17215880a78f:0x729182bae99836b4!8m2!3d33.8937913!4d35.5017767

    i.e. north of the Stadium.

Great spot OP. For anyone going Id highly recommend visiting the Roman ruins at Baalbeck, its around 50 miles from Beirut. The ruins are not as extensive as Palmrya just across the border in Syria but they are still well worth a day trip. and are one of the highlights of Lebanon. Also if going there in winter Lebanon has around six different ski resorts, one of them is almost 3,000m and gets great snow.

It's ridiculous that France and Belgium have the same DFA security status as Lebanon and Egypt for example.

    Hi,
Should you go to Lebanon, make sure you take in the Jeita Grotto. Located about 11km north of Beirut. There is a lot of history in that country and Beirut is a wonderful city. Is it safe, is anywhere safe, but if you use your senses you'll be fine.
Someone asked why would the Lebanese love the Irish, well over 47,000 Irish men and women have served there with the UN, and 47 paid the ultimate price.
A wonderful country and wonderful people......

Seems like an absolutely beautiful country and I'd love to visit some day, but folks should be aware that the level of danger being faced there is rather higher then just some French/Belgium level threats!

There is an active war going on just across the boarder with Syria, about once a week Israeli Air Force aircraft fly over Lebanon and fire guided missiles from there at Syria, Syria has responded with SAM's. Tensions are currently very high between Israel and Hezbollah, if war breaks out between them then there would be war in Lebanon.

Of course, nothing might happen and I hope it doesn't for every ones sake there, but I don't think I'd take my whole family there at the moment. Might be great for a young adventurism person and most likely have a great time, but just FYI on what the situation is there at the moment.
