A camera has been placed near the sea eagles nest at Garnish island in Cork.

There seems to be at least one chick in the nest.

Saw these guys in the flesh during a trip a few years ago. They are ENORMOUS. Anyone who's been to the dead museum there's a stuffed one on the ground floor on the left which gives you an impression of how big they are.

The only small detraction from the experience is the large tag on then, but that's clearly necessary. Hopefully they will thrive to the point that the population are totally free of our intervention at some point.

Its amazing to see the animals that we either used to have or turned up on occasion. Lammergeirs, snowy owls, an enormous sturgeon taken from the Liffey, a type of penguin that's now gone extinct!

I haven't been there too many times, but I always got out with mixed feelings - I felt in large part sad for the stuffed animals but i also felt a sense of disbelief that some of the exhibits weren't actually man-made props.

Yes some of them are pretty naff alright, there's also an extremely malnourished looking lion upstairs. But kids love it and you do get to realise the extent of species that used to be here which is useful.

The two chicks seem to be doing well. The good weather helps a lot at this time of the year. Many nests were wiped out last year by storm Hannah.

looking at the nest today it looks like the larger chick is much more active and getting more food. It seems to be attacking the smaller chick at some of the feeding times. Is this normal behavior?

Pretty normal - its even more extreme in Golden Eagles who rarely if ever raise more then one chick

Huge size difference over the last few days. Small one continuing to beg for food but looking noticeably weaker.

Yes have been looking at that struggle. I thought the young one was a goner yesterday but it seems to be hanging in there. It seems to be getting scraps hopefully it can survive. Yesterday the male brought a huge carcass so if he can stay in the fight there seems to be plenty of food.

one chick died last week but the other chick is developing well. The male hasnt been seen since Monday. He was seen mating with another female earlier in the year so maybe he has split loyalties.

The mother was away from the nest today for long stretches. The chick was joined by a scal crow for much of the afternoon. The crow was more interested in the remains of food rather than the chick which is a fair bit bigger than the crow. The father seems to be missing maybe supporting another female. I think the WTE people are still supplying fish to the female, I suppose without this help she would find it very difficult to support the chick

It seems like the weather has behaved this year so maybe we will have a few chicks raised to fledgling. The weather across the country for the next 10 days seems pretty benign so hopefully any chicks will be more advanced even if the weather breaks later in the month.

WTE chick harassing the crow who seems more interested in the food detritus around the nest.
Does anyone know if there any larger corvids like ravens in the area. Are there buzzards in the area? I would imagine a buzzard or raven would pose a much bigger threat to the chick.

It looks like a crow was brought to the nest this morning by the mother maybe the same one that was visiting the nest when she was away.

There are some high winds coming this weekend, the breeding season weather has been incredibly benign this year.
Hopefully it can be a bumper year for eagle production but this weekend will be a test I suppose. Last year a storm had a
bad impact on nest but I think the winds of this weekend are much less severe and it is a month later in the season.

Uneducated farmers who wont take the time to learn about buzzards.A farmer posted a question here before asking would his calf be in danger from buzzards!...at least he was inquiring and not poisoning without question.

Squirrel visits eagle nest: today an unsuspecting red squirrel scampered up the tree while chick looked on with curiosity. It's not known when squirrels colonised the island, but they can swim so perhaps one swam from the woods fringing the harbour.

Eaglecam update: chick is 7 weeks old today! The eaglet is practising for flying, with wing-flapping and 'hopping'. It should fly the nest in 3-6 weeks time. Chick can now feed itself i.e. hold down prey with its talons & tears off bits.

Eaglecam update: mum's daily routine = delivering prey for 8-week-old chick, adding sticks (once nearly knocking chick out of the nest!) and removing old bedding/prey. At the end of the day she deserves the chance to eat in peace while chick snoozes!

It's a girl! The Glengarriff white-tailed eagle chick was fitted with wing & satellite tags yesterday by
@KerryeagleMee
. At 9 weeks old, she's the same size/weight as an adult: females are larger than males but this chick was particularly heavy at a whopping 6.8kg!
