Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

"The Many Deaths of the Black Company" by Glen Cook. I really enjoy the series, got into it because Steven Erikson was influenced by it when he and Ian C Esslemont created the Malazan series.

Currently reading: "A Little Man and 100 Cardiacs gigs" which is a great read. Cardiacs are my favourite band in the world.

Got "Under the Dome" by Stephen King for Christmas so may read that next.

Have just finished "Snuff" by Terry Pratchett.

Millenium by Tom Holland..basically about Europe around the turn of the 1st millenium as per the title..fascinating for anyone with even a mild interest in history.
One I've read recently which is one of the best books I've ever read is "the begrudgers guide to Irish politics" by Brendáin O' h-Eithir...kind of an offbeat history of politics in Ireland, some hilarious stuff in it.

    Fortress Besieged
Marriage is like a fortress besieged: those who are outside want to get in, and those who are inside want to get out.
(Le mariage est une forteresse assiégée, ceux qui sont dehors veulent y entrer, ceux qui sont dedans veulent en sortir.)"

The Man in the High Castle, by Philip K Dick.

Sort of alternative history - what if Germany and Japan had won WW2.

Liking it so far (I'm halfway through).

Got a Kindle for Christmas and just finished my first book on it, A Stolen Life by Jaycee Duggard. Sad story but an interesting read.

Downloaded Stephen King's The Stand to read next. I love having all these books available at the touch of a button, I'm in my element!

Don't bother. That goes for the book as well as the film. The book even more so, in fact.

The Angel Esmeralda - Don Delillo. Nine enjoyable short stories, best one as per title.

Also, just finished a great book about the extraordinary life of an ordinary man growing up in Australia late 1890s. A truly stunning autobiographical story: A Fortunate Life Albert B Facey.

    Highly recommend it.

Looking forward reading Jon McGregor's 'If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things'.

Just finishing up A Dance With Dragons by G.R.R. Martin, the fifth in A Song of Ice and Fire.

It's good, but not quite as good as the last few in the series imo.

    Stephen Pinker
The better angels of our nature

It is absolutely fascinating and interesting and for an 800 page book which deals with the decrease of violence in humanity and our cultural evolution it is actually a page turner.

We really are becoming a nicer less violent specie, his argument is compelling.

For those that like an informative book
    Highly recommended.

    Recently finished reading:

Tickling the English: Darragh O'Brien - would rate it 3/5 - just okay, barely.
11/22/63: Stephen King - despite the rave reviews, just meh from me. 3/5 really.
What Einstein Told His Barber - Good read. 3.5/5
War Horse - Good book, not great, movie is probably better. 3.5/5
Married to Bhutan - 4/5 - great read.

Currently reading: Divergent, fast paced and simple. Looking good so far.

Quantum Theory Cannot Hurt You, A Guide to the Universe by Marcus Chown

Filled with head baffling and humorous truths starting with the fact that if a way of removing empty space from matter could be weaponised then the entire human race would fit into a space no larger than 1cm cubed

Also starting to reread The Night Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko, just so I remember the story so I can start into its sequels The Twilight Watch and Final Watch.

Two at the moment. About half way through the second book in the Song of Ice and Fire series,
    'A Clash of Kings - George R R Martin'
and just started the first book in the Dark Tower epic,
    'The Gunslinger - Stephen King'
Both excellent. Pleasantly surprised by The Gunslinger. Didn't really expect to be liking it as much as I am.
