Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. (edit : title should read Google Pixel, sorry that was auto correct!)

Considering the pixel phones are quite pricey, is anyone else excited to see these 2 cheaper alternatives being announced at Google I/O today?

They're rumoured to have the same camera tech so should be very strong in the camera department.

    Google Pixel 3a XL
    gOled screen 6.0" 1080x2160 pixels
    12MP 2160p
    4GB RAM
    Snapdragon 710
    3700mAh

    Google Pixel 3a
    5.6" 1080x2160 pixels (oled?)
    12MP 2160p
    4GB RAM
    Snapdragon 670
    3000mAh

Plenty of leaked photos out there too!

If the rumours hold up it'll be a great way to get such a good phone camera for that kind of money. For all the talk about lack of RAM, Pixel phones are a great to use too.

Apparently sales of the Pixel 3 have been poor. I would be interested in this but what is the price point likely going to be and will it be available to Ireland?

I've heard in a few places it'll be $399 for the 3a and $549 for the 3aXL. No idea on availability here but they'll either be the same figures in Euros or even €450/€600 knowing the way they price us here.

At this point the Pixel 3a isn't so much a rumour, rather an inevitable fate as Google can't keep a secret.

edit: I'm not holding out for Google to do this at a much lower price point like they did with the Nexus devices. And if they do release a cheaper phone, it probably won't be a spec killer.

That's still fairly pricey in my opinion compared to what's out there. I went from a Nexus 6P to a Nokia 7 Plus and haven't looked back. Instant updates are great but with a number of Android One options now the Pixel line is less and less appealing.

Yeah it won't really be an option as an overall phone but it will be for someone who has camera as top of their list in a phone and don't want to spend upwards of 800. A Nokia 7, or 90% of other phones, won't be comparable to a Pixel at all in that respect. That's if they leave the camera as it is in the dearer model.

So how would this compare to the Galaxy S9 that is about the same price?

I need to get a new phone with budget of ~ €400.

    Thanks

But for 3a XL UK price is £459 = 534 Euro
    Ireland €479

    And for 3a
    UK £399 = 465 Euro
    Ireland €399

    Wtf!?
This time UK consumers get shafted?!
(BTW I checked price for Spain and it's the same as Ireland)

S9 will be better in every way except for the camera.

I'll probably buy the 3a, I don't know a huge amount about phones but it looks decent to me. I just need a smartphone that isn't huge and that has decent battery life, mostly used for calls and emails and casting to a screen.

Anyone know if this is coming to Vodafone given that they ranged the Pixel 3?

Unfortunatley, cos Argos stock distro is UK based, it'll be based off the UK pricing structure.

Still got added Paddy Tax, but you'll be better off buying from the source :)

Carphone Warehouse are offering a free Acer Chromebook with These in the UK, wonder if the Irish site will have a deal like this, if they end up stocking the phones. Would make it tempting, could easily sell on the Chromebook.

According to this article it will be available at Vodafone https://www.buzz.ie/tech/google-launches-two-new-pixel-smartphones-325974

"The two handsets will also be available in-store from Vodafone later this month, but only in the black and white variants.

Both will cost from free on Red bill-pay plans. Pixel 3a will be priced at €349 on prepay while Pixel 3A XL will be priced at €449 on prepay."

    Nice price from VF.

If there was an easy way to get my hands on a Dual SIM version, I'd snap it right up :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭micks_address

Are the both the 3a and 3a xl missing the pixel visual core? The photos can't match the 3? Some hands on reviews saying the low light photos suffer on the 3a

Considering the XL for 479 from Google, then sell the Google home mini for what,40/50 quid?

I've never properly looked into the Pixel phones. IP rating usually worries me, but I'm using a Vodafone Smart X9 the last 4 Months with no trouble. Planned on P30 Pro or S10 but j can't justify the price.

3700mah is plenty on the 3aXL so I'm sure I'll get 1.5 days. Would this camera be up there with an S10 or even better than a s9? I'm worried as there is only a single lens?

Really interested in trying stock android too. What are the main advantages of this versus say Samsung software? Thanks

Edit - any other opinions on a phone for approx 450 euro mark?

You'll do well to get 25 euro for a mini

They often go down to €39 new, so maybe €30/€35 might be your best price to people who would know their stuff :)

They're both dual SIM I thought?
However one SIM needs to be an eSIM and afaik Comreg hasn't approved eSIMs in Ireland... yet.

Will see if I end up picking it up :) Would do for a present even!!

Honor View 20 (460 euro), Samsung A70 (390 euro) and Mi 9 (449 euro) are also different options to consider, with their own pros and cons. I'm intrigued to see what the fuss is about Pixel devices though!!

Thanks mick, it'll be handy for travel alright.
But I'm not looking for dual SIM for that purpose, it'd be for personal and work numbers in the same handset :)

Like right now, I have a personal Three number and a Vodafone number I use for work :)

    not yet.

just watch youtube videos in any case.

demo models in shops are usually just dummy models in any case.

An always on display has kind of taken the place of LEDs in most phones.
Unfortunate really, as I really liked LEDs on phones.

The S10 has an app that uses the pixels around the camera cut out to notify.
It's pretty cool, but not much use for other phones!

Another phone I'm looking at is the Honor View 20, has a nice discreet one beside the microphone on top! not a deal breaker by any means, I've had iPhones in the past :D

also deciding between an s9 and 3a. S9 can be got fairly cheap on bill pay (like Tesco were doing 249 for the phone on 30 an month for 18 months).

Camera (video in particular) is a priority for me above all else. I am coming from an S7 and it has been fantastic in terms of camera. i often run external shotgun mics on the phone too. One issue I have had with the s7 is external wireless mics are hit and miss as sometimes the phone does not seem to detect them.

I do like the idea of paying for the phone outright and being able to swap sim only deals as I am a commitment phobe.

Be interested to hear how people compare the video on the 3a to to the galaxy s9/10.

3a xl looks great value....pixel 3 takes astonishingly great photos for a phone, may not have the zoom capabilities of a p30 pro, but to me the difference in quality of photos taken is big, and night mode photos may be brighter on the p30 pro but they look far better and more natural, to me anyway, on pixel 3.
only thing with pixel 3a is could i live with just 64gb storage....thats the only thing.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 26,658 ✭✭✭✭OldMrBrennan83

I've a 64GB 3XL and I regularly clear the crap with the Files app (photos/junk/memes/etc), so I've never even hit 32GB usage on it (using 26.13GB currently). That said, if I used MP3's it would probably be a different story.

They're on Vodafones site now under the bill pay section. The 3a is free on the three plans and the 3aXL is free on them all except the €40 a month where it's €150.

Using mine on Google fi since yesterday. Pixel 3a. I have a 3xl as well. Have to say I'm liking the 3a. It's very light compared to the glass xl. Easier to hold if watching YouTube etc. Haven't had a chance to do major photo comparison but so far looks good. Experience is pretty snappy to. It's interesting I'm using esim with Google fi.. pretty convenient. The billing isn't bad either. It's 20 dollars a month then 10 dollars per gigabtye capped at 60 dollars.. they throttle data at after 14gb I think. They gave me 100 credit for buying 3a and I used a referral code to get 20 dollars more. Have a Google fabric case on the phone. I miss the wireless charging as have the Google stand but for basically 400 dollars I think the 3a is a very decent proposition. Consistently great pictures, fast enough user experience and good enough battery life.
