Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Thanks for the images. Im sure it will be a lot different up there in a weeks time.
Im suprised the temperature was higher at the kippure gates, since its a few metres higher than the sally gap.

Thanks for these images. One of the lads was cycling up that way telling me bout the conditions, but it's nice to put actual images to what he was saying :)

/He was not of course telling me the conditions were far better down here and I'd no excuse not to out taking in long spins :o

These are from the Military Road in Wicklow. Was strange driving through floods at the start of the journey and then 30 minutes later driving through a foot of snow.

Few pic's from Patrickstown hill outside Oldcastle this afternoon.
About 6 inches of snow and nearly a foot drifts in places.
The brother said it reminded him of finland last last december, just not as powdery.

I forgot the ruler so had to use other ways to measure the depth, about 6 inches.

Just finished two days of investigation of the new snow. Snowline somewhere around maybe 300 metres. Yesterday was on Three Rock Mountain (just above Dublin's southern suburbs). Decent amount of snow and powdery, maybe 50cm, more higher up. Hiked up the fire road, and skied back down as poor vis.

    65812_10151259501989317_1729036787_n.jpg

Today was a bigger day, parked car at Killakee car park at start of Military Road, and walked up road past forest in direction of Glencree. Had touring kit (intentionally bought for days like today). Haven't put the skins on before so enthusiastic about the whole experience. Made rapid progress up the first hill and because of the snow depth and lack of steepness slowly skied back down to the road, snow was powdery about 50cm.

After crossing the road decided to tackle Kippure (750m), this would take some time as there is a half an hour bog road walk followed by a moderate climb 45mins, however these times are based on walking not skinning. The snow was deep (1 metre + in places) so progress was slow, eventually summited after about 2 hours at about 2:30pm. Cold up top with East wind blowing and my fingers were getting numb so didn't hang around long although got some panorama shoots of the main peaks around. A little flat the light but ski down good fun. Got back to Military Road about 4pm with light fading. Was too tired to walk back to car so luckily got a lift with a 4 wheel drive back to my car, many 'tourists' that shouldn't have been up there in their ill equipped vehicles slipping and sliding along Military Road. hungry and tired by the time I got home, just in time for Ski Sunday!

    The kit

Taken up at Sally Gap this afternoon after it eventually stopped snowing. It was snowing really heavy this morning but drove back up in the afternoon when the skies started to clear a bit.

So, on Sunday I managed to get from Killakee Road - across the mountains on Old Military Road, and all the way over to the Sally Gap :-))) then decided in fast-fading light it's probably best to turn down towards Roundwood rather than continue on to Largh! Crossing the mountains was 'exciting' - especially when the trail started to disappear, and I was thinking... "ok, I guess not many people come up this far, I'm going to be that eejit on the news getting rescued" ... thankfully the snow-virgin 4x4 made it through, although low-range was required at times! :) here's some pics... didn't stop up topside to take any as it was a bit touch'n'go at times and light was at a premium!

Snow depth at about 450m - although there were parts where it was approx 100cm (waist height).

Heading back 'down' after passing Sally Gap - a very welcome defined trail!!

Is this Luggala? Did you come from Roundwood side, what was road like up to here today?

Yep, it's Luggala overlooking Lough Tay. I came from Roundwood side. If you have a 4x4 it's no problem to get to the first car park area near the very top. I didn't try go to the very top but I did see two other's 4x4's going up there without any problem.

If you don't want to drive up, then park at Ballinastoe wood and trek straight up the fire road to the top. It takes approx 45 mins from there.

Does anyone know is it possible to get across the river to Luggala side without getting wet if I skied down?

The road up was fine to here but afterwards it's tricky enough. I parked at the entrance to the luggala estate a bit further up. (Have good tyres and used to driving in snow)

Not sure about getting across the river. Some good powder up there now but thaw will be on the way for the weekend. How good would a mobile ski lift be :D

Nice shots there. Any chance you can link exactly where the second last photo was taken? Want to take the nephew tobogganing and that looks like a good place for it.

That photo was taken on the main road up to the transmitters about 150 meters from the top of the 3Rock. There were loads of people tobogganing there and a few skiing.

If you look at the map below you can start at point A and toboggan for about 600meters to point B. If you stop there to the left is a small opening between the trees. It looks like a great run but I would say is super fast with lots of branches overhanging so watch your head.alternatively you could keep on the main road down to the barrier and that is a 1.3 Km run.

Get up soon before the snow melts. Most people are leaving their cars at the bottom car park because the roads up to the barriers are slippery.Dont park on the double yellows outside on the road, the Guards were giving out parking tickets there the other day.

Thanks very much cameramonkey - that sounds perfect! Yeah I was up at Djouce at the Sally Gap today and although it was snowing slightly, you could hear the snow melting and dripping from the trees. I will probably head up to 3 rock on Thursday so hopefully daytime temps stay somewhat low.

    Cheers again for the info.

Was up in Wicklow today for a ski trip, Went to Ballinastoe Wood and hiked over to Lough Tay, stayed on the forest tracks and also skied down the road at Lough Tay. Snow a little softer and more consolidated with some melting. See photos below
