Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Mad for such a small vehicle to be articulated. I'm actually going to stop asking questions on this thread and start googling for fear of absolutely derailing it and wrecking everyones head!

    Thanks.

I assume they exist because of ground clearance and separate chassis or something?

This gullwing W124 was from a company called Boschert, they used to be hawked around various European car shows in the early 90's as well. I actually loved it, no idea what they cost new, but this one was up for sale last year for $1.1 million. Front is off a R129.

I used to drive one, mine was based on a Unimog. Thankfully replaced by decent tail lifts on trucks.

There were a few low volume supercar manufacturers in Germany in 80's and early 90's, but the economic downturn from reunification closed a lot of them. Some of my favourite were:

Isdera Imperator 108i, designer Eberhard Schulz had worked on the CW111 for Mercedes which is reflected in the design. ca. 30-35 built, note the rear view mirror is a periscope on the roof.

    1024px-Isdera_imperator_1.jpg

    IS4_1.jpg

They also built this, the Commendatore 112i, 350 Km/h, only 2 built, engine and vitals from the W140 600 SE.

    CMF_-Isdera-Commendatore-112i-1993-650x320.jpg

Dauer 962, the GT LM Sport version could seemigly be adapted to race in Le Mans from being a European compliant road car with less than 1 hours work for two mechanics.

    962LM_big.jpg

Then Bitter had these, based on Opel Monza/Senators. Very, verypretty cars, used to see one regularly in Hannover when I lived there.

    b3.jpg?w=547

Coupe had shades of a 400/412

    001.jpg

There were loads of others; Ruf, Lotec, Koenig, AMG, all were tuners, some went on to bigger things, some just fell by the wayside.

I have a vague recollection that it took advantage of some loophole but I can't recall what it was now. I'm open to correction but possibly something to do with regulations pertaining to a second driver. In a standard HGV, if it has a second driver, the second driver isn't deemed to be 'resting' if the truck is moving.

Nothing extraordinary about this car at first glance
    dtw-iron-curtain-1-003-trabant-p603-dziennik-pl-and-antymoto-com-e1597016389717.jpg

    except ...

It was a prototype, about ten of them were built in 1966, before hatchbacks really were a thing.

It was several years pre-Golf and really could have been a big success.
Only problem was, unlike the million-seller that the Golf became, it was also German built, but the wrong Germany unfortunately....the GDR.

Engineers developed this to succeed the Trabant which they saw only as a stop-gap solution..the party leadership was of a different opinion and killed the project and so the stop-gap lasted until the wall came down.

The prototype is called Trabant P603

The engineers tried again throughout the 70's with the P610, but that was killed also

    Dear lord no.....

Why not? It was a small hatch with as much space as a Ford Mondeo and a unique very clever safety system. Yes the interior could have been better but the 2and generation addressed that.
The 2nd generation looks great and is very classy too.
The ones after that just got boring and normal.

The Fiat Multipla that a poster above posted is a great car too even if it was not the best looker it had a great interior and drove good.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,394 ✭✭✭ManOfMystery

The Multipla got got good reports, but aesthetically it was an incredibly strange looking thing. It's like someone designed the bottom half of the car in one factory, and someone else designed the top half elsewhere, realised they didn't fit together right but had no budget left to correct it so just ploughed on.
