Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Leona was interviewed on the radio last week and said that Lisa had gone through a major swing change this year and was starting to play some good golf again.

Leona herself said she was just starting to work with the same coach on something small in her own game so I guess she must think a lot of him after seeing Lisa's improvements

Hopefully they fulfil their potential of early years, however this girl Olivia Mehaffey is something else to watch, 18yrs old, +5 hcap, tall and strong, hits it miles, she looks like shes going to be a fantastic player, shes going to college in USA and is already no7 in the world, the highest ranked non college golfer. Defo a future world no1 once she starts doing well in college events.

-3 after 6 holes today, -4 for the championship

Finished the day on -3. Should easily make the cut, and give her a good chance to be top amateur and hopefully a top 10 at the weekend.

3 amateurs at -3 at the moment, so that could be a good nip and tuck weekend

  • Registered Users Posts: 348 ✭✭frink

Mehaffey +5 at the moment doesn't look like she will make the cut which is a pity.

She will be some player in the future though!

Currently -5 at the turn in her third round.

In at -7. A good bit behind the leaders but she looks comfortable in that company.

Hopefully we'll see a bit of her tomorrow. I think the interview was the only tv time she got

We saw her on 18 but that was about it. BBC didn't exert themselves with their coverage - we saw about ten players at most all day.

According to this, she's going to Q school in October. I'd say she's way ahead of the curve in terms of ability, so hope she makes it

Leona is playing in Stage 2 of the LPGA Q-School this week. Level par for round 1 and in T43 spot. Top 80 make it through to the final stage

My thinking from last year remains the same. Silly decision in my opinion. College will always be there should the golf career fail but the opposite is not true.

Probably in the minority here... but I just don't understand why she is wasting her time in college. She is going to have a life playing golf. Turn pro and start your career. Look at what Lydia Ko is doing... having just turned 18. Do what Jordan Spieth did... quit college and start making your millions.

    Super decision imo.

It would be silly to miss her last year of college for her degree at this stage.
As for making millions by turning pro now... that's far from a certainty.

Her pro career will becwauting for her next year

I think I'm with you there as far as finishing her studies. Once your outta school for a while it's hard to get back to the books plus another year on the amateur circuit will do her no harm for every McIllory and Speith there's a thousand unknowns who were the next big thing and are probably scraping their way around the hooters tour in a 20 yr old banger. The ladies tour is probably every bit as hard as the mens just less money. I hope she does make the LPGA or the LET soon but I think she's better off with an education for this year

Its only one extra year playing AM golf. Very smart decision.

Still no 1 in the world, and playing the in the ladies British amateur open this week. Winner gets a spot at the Ladies British and US opens.

She qualified from stroke play, won matchplay round 1 5&4, round 2 7&6, and will be playing in round 3 today

Website for scoring and updates is pretty decent:

All Irish amateurs use that flag, as GUI/ILGU are island of Ireland, not just ROI

Firstly I want to send the biggest congratulations to Leona on this massive achievement. From a very young age, Leona along with sister Lisa were already making waves winning several underage tournaments and even appeared on RTE news some years ago such was their potential at that stage of their lives. However it was until going to Duke university in the United States where both Leona and Lisa went on a golf scholarship a few years ago that their games changed dramatically. In Leona's case the results were instant. In her 1st year she won 3 collegiate titles with winning the lucrative Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational in back to back years a sign of her rising potential. Her world ranking went up significantly.

Even in pro events where she was competing as an amateur she was continuing her extraordinary progression. Results included the following

2nd in the European Masters 2015
Top 25 finish in the British open 2016
Tied 21st in the Olympic games golf competition 2016

2016 was a huge year for her outside of her performances in pro events. She helped GB&I to Curtis Cup glory over the US in Dun Laoghaire and at Mexico in September she along with Olivia Mehaffey and Annabel Wilson won Ireland a bronze medal in the World amateur golf championship. She also became the world number 1 amateur golfer, a position she still holds today.

This is an fantastic victory for her. I'm certain there will be great celebrations in Slieve Russell, her home club tonight. Finally a lot of what Leona has achieved must go to her former coach and Galway man Shane O'Grady who must be feeling a great sense of joy and feeling that he is part of the success of the pride of Cavan.

Going along nicely at -3 thru 13 in the Women's British Open, just a shot off the lead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,423 ✭✭✭✭Rikand

Finished -3. Couple of 3-putts on the back 9 cost her a bit, but she got a nice bit of coverage on BBCs highlights show

One under today and finished at -4. A good chance she'll be out with Michelle Wie tomorrow.

Onwards and upwards, expect a lot in the pro tour given she nearly won the French (I think) a year or so ago.
    Great stuff

So both of them have now turned pro, Leona just beat Lydia Ko's record of most weeks womens #1 amateur.
The pair announced that they will make their professional debut at the ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer that will be held June 8-10 at the Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club Bay Course in Galloway, N.J.

She's not even an above average amateur let alone good enough to play Pro.

In your opinion. She no doubt feels she can so we will have to see how it works out for her.

She is 1081 (17th Irish) in the amateur world rankings. I guess while she can get a few invites she will keep Leona company.

Hopefully revisit this a few years from now with Lisa winning. In a recent interview Leona mentioned Lisa had gone through some swing changes and was starting to see the benefit.

Personally i hope they both do great

I get the point, her college career has been disappointing, maybe she’ll turn things around but if I’m honest I thought she’d end up on Leona’s bag
