There seems to a ever multiplying amount of True Crime pods out there at the moment, I felt maybe it was better to make a seperate thread about all the ones that might go under the radar a bit? Rather than to just shoehorn into the casefile thread or whatever?

Anyway was listening to a newish Irish one the last day, The Crimeroom -

It's alright I suppose. Bit of a blatant casefile copycat though: spooky ambient soundtrack and an anonymous narrator called "X". Bit cringy to me how they've aped that aspect of the other show - though I swear I can almost place the voice of the narrator, I think she works in the media somewhere here.

Good idea, I came on just looking for something similar.

I like this, as it has Irish stories that you won't hear on many of the popular US and European podcasts. First podcast I've heard do an item on the death of Robert Holohan. Also does Veronica Guerin, Padraig Nally, and others. Well worth a listen.

I've also been listening to that Australian podcast The Teacher's Pet which is like a reality show at this stage. I wont spoil it for anybody who hasn't been listening but it's worth a listen as well.

And of course West Cork is great but I think you have to sign up to Audible for that.

Two new true Crime Podcasts have been released recently.

Conviction by Gimlet media. All episodes are available now. I've listened to the first episode and it's interesting so far.

Over My Dead Body is the latest series from Wondery, the same team that made Dirty John and Dr. Death. There's only one episode of this one released so far, I haven't listened to it yet so can't comment on whether it's interesting or not.

it's a one-off story. in a similar style to Dirty John as the poster above said.

has higher production values than the one-off stuff but if you're looking for a casefile type thing it's not that.

Another vote for Mens Rea. Focuses mostly on Irish crime with a few well known British cases too.

"Once Upon a Crime" is good too, - a different case each time or maybe over 2 episodes. Well told and easy to listen to.

Started listening to this based on the recommendations here, enjoying it so far.

Although I can't make out if the narrator's accent is American or Irish!!

I think she grew up in the states or lived there for a while, there's a thread about the show elsewhere on the forum where the host herself helpfully turned up to post a bit about the show.

The one on the Robert Holohan case is the only real doc I've ever heard about the case.

Really good podcast I'm listening to about Elizabeth Holmes of Thernos at the moment as well. Not sure if it's strictly considered true crime until she's found guilty. But it's a good listen.

I would recommend the book that the podcast is based on - Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup

It's a brilliant read.

Yeah I saw interviews with the author Carryou. Seems like he did good work. I was going to get the audiobook, but it's 13 hours. And I'm trying to listen to something productive in the car !!

In other news, I just found this, about one case that has really fascinated me ever since the story of the window being "jemmied" changed.

John Carreyrou was the person who broke the story in October 2015

this is the first of a series of articles (paywall as wall street journal), eventually leading to the book which is good but tails off about 2/3 of the way through.

Who is the fool? The Sword and Scale guy or Aaron Mahnke?

Seems a bit of a stretch to blame someone else when he was the one putting up knowingly provocative stuff on Twitter.

I used to listen to Sword and Scale back in the day but I got sick of it after a while. It had a lot of the characteristics that makes me hate certain true crime shows - overly gratuitous just for the sake of it and a lot of mawkish and disingenuous sentimentality.

There's no doubt that he's a dick but I still enjoyed Sword and Scale and it's a shame that it's finishing.

To be honest I think cancel culture is getting beyond a joke at this stage.

I agree. It's really good. And most of the cases are UK based so I would have been vaguely familiar with some of them.

Loving The Serial Killer podcast, only found it recently. Highly recommend. Also agree with the above, They Walk Among Us is fantastic, straight to the facts no bullsh1t.

I've listened to 2 crime junkie podcasts so far. Really enjoyable.

Also the uk true crime podcast is decent.

Most of the ones I listen to have already been recommended in this thread but give True Crime Sweden a try. I also like Crimes of Passion. Both narrated by a woman

Started listening to one called "Root of Evil" which is kind of about the Black Dahlia murder and also kind of about a really messed up family.

Recently listened to;

The Teachers Pet - amazing story, bit drawn out and the Australian accents are veeery stong.
The Lady Vanished - again, annoying Australian accents but the story is tenuous and goes nowhere.
The Skrink Next Door - very interesting, not murder/gore, more about a moral issue and abuse of power
Dr Death - this actually hinges on whether the case is criminal or merely negligent or incompetent, but amazing how it happened.
The man in the Window - about the Golden State Killer, a bit procedural, but it gave a voice to a lot of his victims and was insightful as to how rapes were treated back in the 70's and 80's and societal attitudes.

I have to bump up Men’s Rea again.

Mostly Irish stories that you already know .. but the level of detail is amazing .

Casefile was the first true crime podcast i listened too and love it
Canadian True Crime - I'm fairly new to it but the narrator is easy to listen too
The Shrink Next Door - enjoyed it - different
22 Hours
Covert - have only done the Osama Bin Laden one but really interesting
Bear Brook
Dr Death
Dear John

If anyone has any along similar lines I'd love to have your recommendations. I have tried listening to others but the narrators at times put me off

I recently listened to Paradise, it was absolutely excellent. If you are a fan of single cases like Teachers Pet, West Cork etc. then it's for you. The BBC guys who present it are very likable and it goes into huge detail on the case.

I've been listening to the You Must Remember This podcast. For anyone not familiar with it, it's a podcast about Hollywood stars etc., particularly from the Golden Age. Sounds tacky but they're actually very well produced mini-documentaries about very interesting stories from that era.

Anyway, a few years back there was a season entirely on the Manson Family. It's popped up on my feed because there's a lot of people listening to it for the first time having just watched the new Tarantino flick.

It's well worth a listen. It's not salacious, headline-grabbing stuff. It's more an investigation into the various cultural ingredients that culminated in that event. It has a 'true crime' undercurrent but there's a lot of focus on the overall mood, music, movies of the time.

You'll find it at episodes 44 to 55.

You Must Remember This is one of the best podcasts around in any genre. I've listened to all of them, even if I don't think I'll care about the story because, without fail, she manages to make every story interesting. The Manson miniseries was top notch.

She hasn't put any new episodes out for a while, so I hope it'll eventually return.

"They walk among us" is very good, mostly UK based and a decent narrator.

I like “my favourite murder” if you want to listen to a couple of gas American ladies talk about the murders that they were obsessed with. It’s very successful and quite funny.

Also have to agree with other posters here who mentioned “the dropout” and ”mensrea” is good too

Breakdown is a very good podcast. It's in the same format as Serial, follows a case as it unfolds. There has been five seasons (I think) up to now.

Cant stand the humour true crime format, tried these 2 lately and they really grated on me,

Me too - I want the crime story not information on two women and their cats. Small Town Murder is similar - I listened for a bit and then they just irritated me with their waffle :rolleyes:

I find shows like My Favourite Murder to be in really bad taste. Though they aren't even the worst.

I can't remember the exact show but it was three American guys chatting about murders and such and they were doing an episode about OJ Simpson and they were cracking jokes about Nicole Simpson having her throat cut - they were awful yokes.

It was one of those, probably Last Podcast on The Left. At the end of the day, I am aware that I'm listening to these podcasts for entertainment, but I think people laughing at the expense of the victims is a step too far. Very charmless stuff.

I agree. I couldn't stomach "True Crime Garage" for that reason.

I imagine the families of victims must be sickened to hear the presenters' inappropriate smart-ass comments and lack of empathy.

can't stand those podcasts with 2 or 3 gobshytes joking how the woman deserved to be raped / killed (actually did hear this said one about Ted Bundy - turned it off then) while they also have their beer of the week feature.
