Rumours of a PME Post-Primary with a language?

    Hello,

I am wondering if anyone in the teaching profession or policy has heard on whether or not the plan to create a PME post-gradate course in post-primary teaching that would be combined with learning (and later teaching) an additional language is a go or not?

Last September it was briefly mentioned in the Irish Times as being 'in development' but sure we all know how this country sometimes works.. "Minister for Education Richard Bruton will today announce details of an initiative to boost learning of foreign languages as well as funding for student exchanges...The Department of Education is also developing postgraduate courses, aimed at training existing language teachers to teach in another language that they are not qualified in."

Basically I have an undergraduate degree in French and am fully bilingual, but would not be able to teach my other undergraduate subject (art history). I am however good a languages and at picking them up.

I am torn between primary school teaching (and specialising in educate together/international schools) or teaching French in secondary schools (since there seems to be a demand). However I am put off by the fact that I would only be teaching one subject.

So basically, if anyone knows what the craic is let me know.. I have read that some qualified teachers are currently upskilling to teach languages that they previously learned but were not fully up to scratch in?

I looked into this before as I speak spanish but don’t have it beyond first year in college.
At the moment they’re only doing people who have say, a French degree but aren’t comfortable teaching it. They’re being upskilled to be able to teach a language they’re already qualified in.

Next phase will be for teachers who are fluent in a second language but don’t have the qualification, or so I’m told.

Best thing would be to start learning another language now. Even if it were part of the PME you’d probably not be fluent enough after the two years for LC. Especially if you’re kept busy with teaching French and all the assignments.
