What colour grout to use?

We're putting new tiles in the kitchen, we've gone for a rich emerald green polished tile with about 5 cream coloured tiles scattered amongst them. The cream tiles have little bugs painted on them in various colours, but they are only small so don't really need to match with them. Walls are a cream colour too. Cabinets are a slightly dark solid oak.

What colour grout should we go for? I'm having trouble picturing what would look best? I don't think a bright white would work, I'd love to have a funky colour but just can't think of one that will match.

Ideas welcome please.

Grey?

Grey seems to be the way to go these days, we used it on black splashback tiles in the kitchen and on the white floor tiles - really comes together well.

White is starting to look a bit dated.

Grey is probably my least favourite colour so I’ll put that in the maybe pile for now.

I’ve been looking at the colour chart for the mapei grouting and wondering if a gold colour might work?

A work colleague reckons the tile shop have a chart that you can put your tiles on and see how it looks so I’ll try that once they arrive too.

I only said grey as I thought there was 2 options, grey or white.

I remember the tiler who did the kitchen floor warning me off white, as he said it was too bright to begin with, and also was more obvious when it got dirty.

So we went with grey. He said most people did.

Didn't know there was such a thing as gold grout!

We once had a bright emerald green bathroom - walls painted that colour: white tiles around bath, had bright green grout - it looked great.
When we had to replace some of the tiles, and had no more of the green grout, we mixed some paint into white grout and used that. Sounds mad, but it worked.

There is also cream grout.

White grout is gone out with the Ark and should never be used on a floor. Even using it on wall tiles is silly as inevitably it will show staining.

The best grout I ever used was a brand named "Benfer", if you can find somewhere nearby that stocks it they will have sample "sticks" of how each grout will look finished so you can compare them to your tiles before choosing. They had a choice of about twenty different colors when they came to Ireland about 15 years ago so i'd imagine they have more now.
