Karma will hit you hard in the face some day MrsStuffings.

But I did miss your comments, they are priceless. Such a mixture of insecurity and bitterness did I ever see!

Good luck guys, let us all get hammered this weekend! :D

id find that very hard to believe

I would be surprised if it was that low but in my experience as long as someone has a reasonable brain, the right type of personality, and is willing to work consistently they will do OK in medicine

    a) if you have an issue with a mod instruction please pm the mod about it rather than derail the thread with discussion about it, as is sitewide policy

    b) comments are fine as long as they are not trolling or baiting

    c) this forum is full of warnings about that so there's no excuse

I cant believe a bigger deal is being made nationally about the recent points drop required for UL, a 1/2 ratio of applicants to medical students is mind boggling. As someone who has done the GAMSAT 3 times I personally feel the system is a joke if people on 51 are being offered places. I want to make this point from my own experience that alot of really easy questions exist on the GAMSAT that a Junior Certificate student could answer correctly, therefore a score of 51 to be quite blunt requires neither intellect or determination! I just hope that the UL GEM Darwin prize is allocated to low scoring applicants before xmas, shudder!!

It is also bad news for anyone in medical school and current docs, we though we couldnt flood the market with houses a few years back.

    are you in medical school?
hve you any aspirations of going to medical school or being a doctor?

i think you'll find that rejecting an offer of medicine in ul means you're in no place to comment on the ul medical school.

''witty'' jokes about darwin prizes being handed out only make you look mindless and bitter. in addition to that, the whopper score of 55 that you got certainly doesnt make you some sort of guru equipped to give advice on all things gamsat and ul gem.

    the school is over subscribed.
you can be sure that anyone without the guts for a fight and anyone who chanced their arm at gamsat (and i include yourself in that category) will be gone from UL long before christmas. well done on not accepting your place. you saved yourself being 14 k in the red come the end of november when reality hits you stark in the face.
evolution in action, who would have thought it!! ;)

I don't wish to speak on behalf of MLH, but was that not his point.

People who chanced their arm can almost certainly finish in the top half of a graduate cohort. It's fine if they kicked out, but presumably the taxpayer has to fund that year anyway, and someone else can't take their place.

 you're not long back from a ban for posting petty personal snide comments directly after a mod warning, and you post this sort of stuff again?

you were clearly told there was going to be zero tolerance for that sort of stuff.

i cant see how i can make it any clearer.

    banned - again.

My cousin was asking me for some info on UL and I know it was posted here before but I cant find it so any info would be appreciated -

What was the final cut off this year does anyone know - Iv read anything from 49-54?
is it true that they don't do any Pharmacology or biochemistry?
when is the med building due to be finished?
will there be dissection labs when it is finished?

    Thanks

    In order:

As far as I know the cut off was 54

    They do pharmacology and biochemistry

Med building will be ready for sept 2012

Nope, you learn through the use of anatomical models and 3d imaging.

We get pharmacology lectures - from speaking with second years i've been told this wasn't the case last year.

We don't get biochemistry lectures and it is not impressed upon us or in our lo's; second years have told me this does not change throughout the rest of the year.

The anatomy is done via minicases.
There is no dissections or any planned for when the new school is opening.

the new school is opening in july 2012.

sidjustice on this forum is a third year i believe so he may be able to answer your questions better re the pre clinical years - i can only answer based on the five weeks we've done so far.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,720 ✭✭✭Sid_Justice

I'm actually only a second year, but it must be my fluent encyclopaedic knowledge of the basic medical sciences that may have made young miss stuffings think I was a 3rd year.

I actually think your questions are irrelevant.

You need to enforce upon your cousin that this course is a PBL course. We don't receive many lectures in general, whether anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, histology, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, behavioural science, neuro whatever.

The course (year 1 and 2)is taught via cases with some guidance from a small number of faculty staff (anatomy/physiology specialist, a pathology specialist and another anatomy specialist) and tutors (usually GPs but also some consultants or people that are neither).

The earliest that medschool will be open to students will be next year, I am not holding my breath on its completion in the next 3 years.

    cheers thanks,

Like myself she's coming from a non science (by non science I mean non bochem which is what they really should say) background and she heard me bitching about Biochem and genetics - when she seen the notes she nearly collapsed so shes thinking she may need some extra help or at least classes. She was thinking of having UL as her first choice but in her opinion there are too many negatives at the moment

Long question - - Are you the same MrsStuffings, pharmacy graduate, a 'serial GAMSAT-er' who nailed a 68 (on your third attempt) this year and sailed into RCSI, bashing UL GEM & those attending there/who wanted to attend at every chance possible, having never done the course so much so that you recieved a ban for a while?? If so I am utterly gobsmacked !!! After all your going you're actually in UL??? What is the story with you ??? I'm sure the RCSI GEM-ers on these boards have been looking around in class since enrolement scratching their heads trying to figure out exactly who you are....well they can scratch no more, looks like you're not even there ;)

My guess is that MrsStuffings is an alternate login of a UL student on the board who forgot which account they were logged in to. Probably done as an attempt to personify every elitist stereotype there is about RCSI and stir up crap.

Not that it's anyone's business, but an error in filling out my cao form meant I ended up in UL. I'm sure many of you will rejoice and have a little celebratory party now that the witch has been knocked off her broom. :)

I've already apologised to the mods for my previous indescrepencies and have vowed to adhere to the forum rules and behave myself from now on. Perhaps everyone else will too. Hopefully this will be the last mention of it.
Now can we stay on topic from hereforth.
    Thanks, and sorry to Sam34

A friend of mine went through the graduate course in Limerick and enjoyed it, think the only thing that took some getting used to was the lack of lectures. I've heard rumours that a med student from another college gave her loads of notes from their medical course, so if some of the newer intake ask around they might be able to get them. Might give you a bit more focus on topics when it comes to exams. Enjoy your time on the course, it goes by so very quickly.

Having to get notes from the other courses wouldnt seem ideal - if everyone is paying roughly the same it would leave me feeling a bit short changed anyway

Just thought I'd mention a few things that I think a lot of people are confused about with regards to UL.

    1. We do pharmacology/biochemistry/microbiology and anything else you would expect from a medical program.
    2. We have as yet not used cadavers. College told my year that this was because of licensing issues with the building the med school is currently run from. When they have the new school this will be resolved. We have used AP revealed, and VH Dissector alot in our study of anatomy. Both are excellent.
    3. We DO get lectures. In pretty much every conceivable topic too. Though for some there is a series such as with anatomy, biostats, legal, psych etc, and for other topics (e.g. nephrology) we get things covered as they come up in the PBL cases.
    4. The exams and standards are very high for those worried that the lower points mean that they are running some kind of remedial programme. People may get in on low points, but will have to work damn hard to pass.
    5. People posting "I've heard they don't do <insert whatever it is this week here>" are usually people who have not been to the med school.

Apologies if I'm coming across as grumpy, I have lots of gripes with the college now, as I have with every other college I've been to (list includes DCU, DIT, UCD, Imperial College - all good, but all flawed in their own ways) but I have yet to see a well constructed and fair critique of our programme from someone who has actually done it on these boards. Bottom line, if you want to do medicine, you will have to work your ass off here as I imagine you will in any other med school and you will get the same qualification for your trouble.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply Limerick students don't get any lectures.

    An honest question here,

I know we've had posts saying what is and isnt done in UL. But as someone who really believed all the scaremongering rumour etc. about UL, then sunsequently are attending, whats your opinion. How true do you think any of it was?
