Is this some weird scenario where people look at television to find out what number to dial with their landlines in order to find out the number of a person who is for some reason non ex-directory?

How can a service like this make money in this day and age?

They're easy numbers to remember and are dead handy when you need to call a shop/company on the move!

I've often been out and needed a number without a phone book. That's where the nifty number comes in!:D

While I do appreciate that they are cheaper and all, I don't see why I should take a nationalist approach to the services I avail of. That comment just comes across as xenophobic!

I meant they have an Irish base/call centre. 11850's call centre is in Mumbai, they moved it over there about 5 years ago.

You obviously don't rely on an Irish company for your living, or need money kept in your local community, or taxes paid into the Irish exchequer. It's just another company we can support as guaranteed Irish.

Explain the logic of that statement! And where exactly does homophobic come into the equation?

I must keep that in mind if i need to use it again! I called 11850 or 11811(can't remember which one!!) a few weeks ago to get the number for doctor on call for my little boy who was sick and I got connected to them. I thought no more about it until I got my phone bill last week, I was on the phone to them for just over a minute and it cost me €4.50!!!

Directory Enquiries used to be free from a payphone.

Anyway http://www.goldenpages.ie/ http://www.goldenpages.ie/ free if you have internet on your phone.

or if you have free minutes / texts get someone at home to look the number

That's where having Google on my phone comes in handy.

Haven't used those services in close to 10 years

I've never understood how these directory companies make any money but then again when many people come onto Boards enquiring on how to travel by train or bus to x and y rather than going onto the relevant website....It seems to me that it's all a matter of having a modicum of organisation - possibly even a notebook with relevant numbers, or putting them into your phone before leaving home.
