Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Can you write "professional training" or education off against your own tax

Suppose you are a PAYE earner and you decide to do some kind of part-time training course to advance your career. I know that if you do an undergrad or Masters from an authorized list that you can claim back tax at 20% on those fees.

But what if you do something that isn't on that list? If your employer paid for it, they could expense it as "training" I'd imagine. But if you do it yourself to further your own career, I don't think that you can claim anything. Am I right about that?

If you set up your own business, could you write it off as an expense? What if you did the course and then later left your PAYE job to say try a new career as a contractor in your new field. Could you retroactively claim it somehow?

I recently noticed a couple of online trainings for well-recognised professional certifications that are either delivered from outside the EU, or are only a few months long. They're not that cheap. But I'd be interested to do them.
