Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Measuring windows

    Want to get a window and door replaced
    Measured them a couple of times and found a but of inconsistency in the measurements. How precise do I need to be? Is it reasonable to ask the installer to measure them before ordering them, or is that not something that is generally done?

    the provider definitely should measure

    if you measure, and youre wrong, you will pay double

    The company will usually issue a quote based on rough measurements but send someone out to do the final ones before they produce them and deposit has been paid.
    You can measure yourself - just take three vertical and three horizontal measurements spaced apart and supply to the window supplier and they'll leave a suitable gap / buffer.
    If in doubt leave it to the company rep....!

    Your own approximate measurements are sufficient for pricing purposes.

    No manufacturer/installer will rely on a client's measurements for fabrication, it is simply asking for trouble. And if any fabricator is suggesting that they will make the windows off your measurements without coming to inspect and measure it themselves then you would be best to stay well clear of them as it would be a wholly shabby process.

    Take rough dimensions and send to a few companies for a quote. When applying for the quotes say all dimensions to be checked on site. When you get the quotes compare them as best you can looking at the details. If in doubt ask for additional information or spec sheets. We can then help you compare. Once you've got the company you want they should:
    • Arrive at your house and present options/samples such has handles and colour samples, discuss opening directions and any other issues.
    • Measure the existing opes
    • Make the windows and doors
    • Arrange delivery and unloading
    • Protect floors, garden, etc.
    • Carefully remove existing doors and windows.
    • Dispose of the old windows and doors in a licenced dump or recycle the materials if possible.
    • Fit new windows
    • Make good plaster around windows both internally and externally.
    • Clean up any mess

    You'll pay a deposit after he's measured and then pay the remainder once he's finished. Besides moving some furniture or removing curtains the day before he arrives you shouldn't do anything. You might have to move the doorbell or get a new letterbox. Generally you don't put a letterbox in new doors as they let heat out.
    The hardest part you should have is comparing the quotes as they're often full of sales talk. Watch out for ex VAT or inc VAT when comparing too and ensure they've everything above covered.
