Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Las Olympics I watched mostly on BBC and it was great as they had a variety of channels I could watch on Sky. As has been mentioned earlier in this thread this will no longer be an option.

is a Eurosport subscription by best/only option for this? I have RTÉ, BBC and Eurosport 1&2 with sky to presumably will get quite a lot of coverage without paying extra...

Love to hear what other Olympic fans are doing :)

Did soemthing happen to the double or did they just not have the pace? That has to go down as a shock, thankfully they've a rep but its not a great start.

  • Registered Users Posts: 359 ✭✭Oldira

Based on that result there isn’t a hope of a medal there. Getting anxious about all our rowers now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,578 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

Yeah bad to see that result. Definite concerns. On the plus side Sunita got through as heat winner comfortably.

Shane Ryan out of his best event the 100m backstroke.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,878 ✭✭✭✭klose

There were surely atleast A final material going on results recently so today is a shock by any stretch.

The LW double should win gold bar any major events and Sanita has as good a shot as any for a medal too.

It wasn't good at all. They got off to a slightly slower start than the other three boats but had pulled themselves back into third by 1000m. At that stage, given that it was three from four to go through, you would have expected them to manage the race from there but by 1500m they were last again and never looked like making up the difference in the last 500m. In the end they pretty much packed it in with 100m to go, presumably realising that they weren't going to make it back and to conserve energy for the repechage.

The only positives I could offer were that there were only small gaps between the four boats throughout and possibly the poor start might have killed their rhythm. Also the heats are very forgiving in that, unless they are absolutely awful, they will get through the repechage. I think the whole stage only results in the elimination of one boat, from 13 down to 12.

However it means taking on an extra race than their main competitors which is likely to reduce any remaining chance of a medal. They skipped the mixed zone after the race so no explanation of what happened.

Puspure looked decent but there's a lot of dead weight in that event so she didn't beat much in relative terms. You could see enough from the winners of the other heats to realise that she'll have plenty of competition for a medal in the final if she gets that far.

That was a much earlier than usual appearance in the Parade Of Nations, we are usually in the Iran Iraq Israel sandwich

    Japanese Alphabet rules.

Has anyone any good ways of following when Irish athletes are competing. I have downloaded app and checked few different websites and i can't find a way to tag athletes/nations. I would like a quick overview that i can look at to see when irish are competing. I know RTE/other news sites will have it each day but I want to see it now!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,537 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

On the official app, in the Schedule section, you can filter by country/sport

Team Ireland schedule for Tokyo. Note that some of the rowing times have since been moved with the Monday rowing schedule moving to Sunday.

Absolutely huge day tomorrow to properly kick us off with rowing, cycling, boxing, gymnastics, taekwondo, boxing and swimming involving Irish competitors. Dressage too but that's probably one to skip since there's loads of more interesting stuff (apologies to any dressage enthusiasts on the forum!). With a team of 116 it will be harder to stay on top of it all than previously but it's great at the same time.

I'm on three weeks paternity leave so the timing couldn't be better really, cover the nights and watch the Olympics at the same time.😀

Hockey and sailing tomorrow as well!

(sailing in the early hours of Sunday morning)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,537 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

    Hmmmmph.

If you filter the app by country (Ireland), then sailing isn't listed as one of our sports 🤨

Not really, many were shocked when they got silver in 2019...and since then it has been an expectation of getting a medal, but that’s mainly based on one race from 2 years ago so from people I know involved in the sport not exactly a shock. They all expect an easy gold from the light double tho.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,178 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

I've seen suggestions that the doubles guys had their training interrupted by the pandemic - one of the two of them returned to being a doctor for a long while.

Some of the other crews should surely be okay. The Womens Fours and O'Donovan / McCarthy have been in quite excellent form this year. I'd be inclined to put last night's flop down as a one off.

Congratulations, make sure you keep us updated.

So 2019 was a bit of a flash in the pan? That actually could make sense. It’s either that or one of the guys was sick/injured. It was an abysmal row and not sure the body language between the lads was that good. May be my imagination.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1 Peter11972

Could they not have chosen a non boxer to carry the flag?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,037 ✭✭✭Cosmo Kramer

Well the two lads managed to find one boat that was slower than them and they have snuck in to the semi finals as the 12th and last boat. Once again, far from impressive though and it would be a surprise at this stage if they went any further at these Olympics.

Hopefully we hear from them as to what the story is, because they're performing way below expectations.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,178 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

Yes, made very heavy weather of it again. We'd have to be hopeful that it is just one boat underperforming on the team. Fingers crossed the other four crews tonight are in much better shape and leave us impressed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,178 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

I would definitely have gone with Kellie Harrington as the female but, yes, you could make a strong case for another sport for the male.

Ireland were probably the last country allowed train for the Olympics seems most other countries opened months ago.

    Gonna be a dissapointing Olympics.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,037 ✭✭✭Cosmo Kramer

Crowley and Dukarska fourth of four in their heat also. To be fair expectations were much lower for them and that result was probably to be expected. Again 12 of 13 will go through to the semi finals so they may well progress from the repechage.

  • Registered Users Posts: 359 ✭✭Oldira

That performance against those crews would be on expectation. They will qualify for the semis as the Chinese looked like they were pulling an anchor. It was a tough heat and the three ahead could all be in the final.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,841 ✭✭✭Panrich

The Chinese were very slow so they’re surely the ones who will miss out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,178 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

They actually gave it a good shot and only faded a bit in the last 300m. Hopefully O'Donovan / McCarthy and the Womens Four give us reason to cheer later (I wouldn't be overly hopeful with the lightweight pair though who are next up).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,037 ✭✭✭Cosmo Kramer

5th of 6 for Casey and Cremen. Again, that would be about right in terms of expectations for them, they only just qualified at the last qualification event. O'Donovan/McCarthy up next for us in a few minutes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,178 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

Excellent opening routine from Rhys McCleneghan......15.266, that looks a strong score and he looked happy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,037 ✭✭✭Cosmo Kramer

I know literally nothing about the pommel horse event but Rhys McClenaghan looked fairly happy with himself after his performance there, so I'm going to take it that it went well!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,178 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

I'm the same, but a quick look through the stats tells me that 15.266 is very high / championship standard. He might need to improve on that score a tiny bit further to medal, but it's a really fine start for him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,037 ✭✭✭Cosmo Kramer

Really straightforward for McCarthy and O'Donovan in their heat. Looked really comfortable out there with plenty more in the tank.

Really impressive stuff from the Women's four there, went toe to toe with the Aussies and finished second to go straight into the A final. Miles ahead of the third placed boat. A real medal prospect for us, that was excellent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,178 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

Fantastic row by the Women's Four.....pushed Australia all the way and only very narrowly edged out. These girls could be contenders to medal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,178 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

And the Australians are the odds on favourite to win the gold. I've had a good feeling about these four all year.....they've been improving and improving.

Has Jack Woolley been on yet? Thought he was due to play at 2.15, but perhaps I missed him.

Kurt Walker starts with a unanimous win. Faces the number 1 seed next though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,178 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

Rhys McCleneghan qualified in first place from his division (there are two more divisions in total).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,037 ✭✭✭Cosmo Kramer

Jack Woolley beaten in his last 16 fight. Was leading with 8 seconds to go but couldn't hold on. Looked devastated at the end.

So that's almost certainly his Olympics over already.

Was mad how tense and close that match was. He did look destroyed. Am I right in saying he can still win bronze via repechage?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,037 ✭✭✭Cosmo Kramer

Yes, but only if the Argentinian that beat him makes the final. He's the 11th seed so he probably won't, which would mean Woolley's Olympics would be over.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,578 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

Ah I see. Desperately disappointing for him so.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,037 ✭✭✭Cosmo Kramer

A bit of a lull now in terms of Irish competitors after a busy early morning. McCarthy and O'Donovan were predictably impressive, but the highlight for me was definitely the Women's Four, they were excellent and will go close to a medal. McClenaghan in good shape to challenge for a medal also. Biggest disappointment was probably Byrne and Doyle, they made the semis but looked well off the pace needed to even challenge for a medal.

The road race will continue for another few hours with the three Irish lads well positioned in the peloton and then there's swimming and hockey later on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,037 ✭✭✭Cosmo Kramer

Eddie Dunbar part of a breakaway group of three in the road race, 50km from home.

Edit - the breakaway doesn't hold, but credit to him for trying it there, if they had gotten away he was well set for a medal.

My legs are screaming at me watching the cyclists doing the mountain stage, brutal stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,037 ✭✭✭Cosmo Kramer

No joy for the Argentinian in the semi final of the Taekwondo so that's the end of Jack Woolley's games, the first Irish competitor to finish up. Will be followed in the next half an hour or so by Martin and Dunbar, who have been dropped in the road race.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,534 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

Is there a general Olympics thread on here at all, or is it just for the Irish team? Can't seem to find it if there is, but this new forum is such a disjointed mess it could be there in front of me and I still wouldn't see it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,444 ✭✭✭✭Skid X

Ireland 1 South Africa 0 at half time in the hockey

Should be further ahead, a second goal would turn the screw

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,178 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

Now 2-0, that should ease the nerves - we've been totally dominant anyway.
