Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

mentioned in one of the other Leapcard threads, but worth it's own thread:

    https://about.leapcard.ie/leap-family-card

€10 for 1 day unlimited travel for 2 adults and 4 kids - pretty good value. It's aimed at the 1916 celebrations but the cards can be used until December.

If you broke Ixflyer's extremely useful Leap posts into individual threads, we'd be scrolling this forum until the cows came home!

Pretty good? It's amazing value isn't the adult multi mode cap a 10 er?

Aside from this promotion, this ticket (albeit at a higher price) in my view should become available as standard to encourage people to use public transport.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,003 ✭✭✭✭Spanish Eyes

Even if you don't have kids, two adults could use it for a day trip using DB LUAS and DART as the cap for one person all modes is €10, as someone else said.

    Am I right?

And it's also amazing value for 6 passengers for a day!

Oh and BTW Leap website says it's available to purchase online today. Except it's not.... yet.... muppets.

although the link above is still live, it's no longer mentioned on the front page of the website and there doesn't appear to be any way of buying one of these tickets. What gives?

I would imagine it will go live once the official launch has taken place which will probably happen this afternoon - the NTA normally issue a news item and press release about changes and once that's issued I'd say that the card will be available to purchase.

Limited edition 1916 Leap Card offers family travel in Dublin for €10 -

    ...
50,000 limited edition cards are being issued in the one-off offer, according to Anne Graham, CEO of the National Transport Authority.

"When they're gone, they're gone," she said.

A maximum of two cards are available per order.
    ...
The NTA will assess take-up and usage of the cards, with a view to developing a more permanent family product in the future.

    This seems like unreal value...

    From the NTA:

Údarás Náisiúnta Iompair, National Transport Authority

€10 Leap Family Card offers outstanding value for family day-trips in Dublin
    2ndMarch 2016

Card commemorating 1916 centenary is on sale from today: www.leapcard.ie

A new, promotional Leap Family Card was launched today by the National Transport Authority. Costing only €10, the Leap Family Card gives a family of two adults and up to four children (aged 18 or under) 24-hours unlimited travel in and around the Greater Dublin Area on Dublin Bus, Luas, Bus Éireann, DART and commuter rail.

“The €10 Leap Family Card offers outstanding value to families who want to make a few day trips together in our Capital City region over the coming 1916 commemorations, or indeed any time in 2016, as the cards can be used for a single day of travel right up to December 31st, said Anne Graham, CEO of the National Transport Authority.

The potential savings for families are very attractive, even if just to catch the bus in and out of town. Depending on how much a family uses public transport during the day, their savings could range from a few Euro up to 20 Euro or more.
“We’ve devised this specially-designed limited edition Leap Family Card to mark this very special centenary year. We hope that more families will chose to use public transport when they’re out and about together, enjoying historic commemorative sites all over Dublin, from the GPO to Kilmainham Gaol to Glasnevin Cemetery. Only 50,000 Leap Family Cards are being made available, two Family Cards are available per order, and when they’re gone, they’re gone”, continued Anne Graham.

She added that the Authority would be assessing the take-up and usage of the Leap Family Cards, with a view to possibly developing a more permanent Family offering with Leap in the future, but that the €10-price-point was a special one-off, and that the specially designed commemorative cards could become collectors’ items or keepsakes from the centenary.

    Some cost comparisons:
    • The €10 Leap Family Card (2 X adult + 4 X children) costs the same as one Adult’s daily travel Cap.
    • It is valid across all travel modes in the Greater Dublin Area, and is €4 cheaper than the Dublin Bus one-day Family rambler (€14) and €10 cheaper than the Irish Rail equivalent (€20)
    • *Lower savings example: eg 2 adults and 2 children travelling from Lucan taking a return bus trip to the city centre on a Saturday using regular Leap Cards would pay €14.80, or €18.80 in cash. So, a Leap family saves €4.80, and a cash family saves €8.80 with the Leap Family Card. NB - Additional trips (bus, DART, Luas, train) in and around town on the same day are ‘free’ with the Leap Family Card.
    • *Higher savings example: eg 2 adults and 4 children travelling from Greystones by rail return to the city centre on a Saturday using regular Leap Cards would pay €33.80. So, a Leap family saves €23.80, and a cash family saves €33.20 with the Leap Family Card. NB - Additional trips (bus, DART, Luas, train) in and around town on the same day are ‘free’ with the Leap Family Card.

I think the particularly brilliant thing about this offer is that it's valid until the end of the year, so people could buy a few now.

So we're happy to gouge tourists at €10 for a visitor card for each person but let the residents have two adults and two kids for the same price?

Surprised to see this includes Airlink, a Commercial service as well, especially considering the knock down price considering that alone would cost more for two adults on single trips

The fact that this is available to tourists also doesn't occur to you?

It also includes the Nitelink so even for that it's cheaper for 2 adults.

If that's the case then it should be possible to buy it from the airport? If it isn't they are gouging tourists by selling them a ticket which is very poor value and hiding the better ticket

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators Posts: 14,088 Mod ✭✭✭✭monument

Some of the context to this is that there will be very extensive traffic restrictions for some of the 1916 celebrations.

So you'd outlaw all promotional tickets? These are available to everyone.

I think people need to bear in mind that this is a limited offer promotion from the NTA, to mark the significance of this year.

It is only available online, and you can only order 2 cards per order, so that does limit people's ability to use it.

I'd personally think that a ticket offering this family travel across modes should be added to the standard range, but obviously at a higher price.

I also think that describing the Visitor Card as "gouging tourists" is going a bit far - €10 for all buses, trams and trains and including Airlink is in normal circumstances very good value. This family card is merely a limited edition offer.

The fact that DB have clearly decided to forego some commercial revenue to allow this card to be valid on Airlink isn't a bad thing - maybe other companies could have joined in and got some good publicity?

If that's the context then why are they making them valid until the end of the year?

I said some of the context.

It would have been in the minds of the planners before it was announced -- there's a lot of planning going on for the events at the moment. I'm guessing the other context could include just a straight-forward promotion to get people thinking about using public transport and testing the demand for such family tickets.

As lxflyer says, it should be a normal ticket option, even if at a higher price.

    Not everybody reads every thread.

People who are interested in this offer or other key new features etc may not be following the sticky Leap thread. And also that thread can be locked very quickly when there's new updates so may not be great for on-going discussion.

I got an email about this last week, thinking about travelling from M3 Parkway to Bray with the children. Would the whole trip be €10 under this card?

You can use all of the suburban trains, DART, all Dublin Bus services and the LUAS for 2 adults and up to 4 children for 24 hours from the time you first validate it, and it will only cost you €10 - it is fantastic value.

Is the Family Leap Card still available? If yes, can I buy it at Heuston Station?

It was only a promotion for 2016. There is a Family Rambler ticket you can get loaded onto a Leap Card, but it's only valid for Dublin Bus.

Going from Heuston Station to Dundrum Shopping Centre. What bus/Luas should I take?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,935 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

145 from Heuston to Kildare Street and then walk over to St Stephen's Green West and take the LUAS Red Line to Balally.

Coming back the 145 stop is on St Stephen's Green North currently.

Put your exact locations (Heuston Station to Dundrum Shopping Centre) and relevant dates and times into www.a-b.ie and tweak the settings.

Most of the time, it is best to get the 145 at the front of Heuston Station to Leeson Street Bridge (hump back bridge over canal). Walk along canal to Charlemont Luas stop. Get Luas Green Line to Dundrum or Balally stop.
