Typical Qualified Paramedic Working Week?

    Hi all,
    • Is there such a thing as a typical working week as a qualified EMT in the NAS?
    • Is it feasible to keep your weekends free or is that a pipe dream?
    • If not possible how many weekends might you have free on average?

    Paramedics work 156 hours per month. Depending on the roster in the station the shifts can vary allot. Some stations have 12 hour shifts which means a paramedic must work 13 shifts per month to make up the hours. Other stations have shorter shifts (8/9/10) hours therefore a paramedic must work more shifts to make up the hours. Typically, it's 3/4/3/3 shifts over 4 weeks or something similar to that where you could change from nights to days every second week or at the end of a month.

    Everyone does weekends and some places paramedics work 2 weekends per month as per their roster, 1 days, 1 nights. In other stations the number of vehicles in duty may be reduced at weekends therefore less weekends per month have to be worked. There are normally more ambulances on duty during the day then at night also. When a new member of staff starts they do not have a working roster and will have their duties allocated to them 2-4 weeks prior to shift. Allot of these duties will be working weekends and nights.
    There simply is no way of getting out of doing weekends, it is a 24/7 service after all.
