Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

AllTrails or ViewRanger for Ireland?

    Hello,

    I've been using AllTrails for my hikes but noticed ViewRanger seems to offer the same thing. I feel its kind of split from online recommendations so was just wondering if there is any benefit to either from an Irish perspective. Thinking mainly for planning hikes, camps. If the Irish community more active in either app?

    Most "serious" hikers want a good map - the Ordnance Survey (OSI) maps cover the country, EastWest maps are very good for hikers in the areas they cover. The openstreetmap stuff is alright for a bit, but I wouldn't be relying on it on a mountain.

    Viewranger has the OSI maps for purchase (download offline). It used to have EastWest, but they now have their own app. I haven't used AllTrails so don't know what's available on that.

    While you have a point, the quality (or lack thereof) of OSM is dependent on volunteers mapping what interests them so in this case, the quality, gradient, surface, amenities, routes etc of hiking routes are all added by folks using those routes. This info is then consumed by everyone else through apps, maps etc

    Very true. I can only speak for Wicklow, but the OpenStreetmap based Viewranger Landscape maps, with added contours, relief shading and landscape features are actually superior in many ways to the OSi offerings in terms of detail.

    I've added quite a few myself :) It's good for route planning, but I find the contours are not accurate in situations where you really need them to be accurate.

    I'd agree the OSI lack detail for hikers.

    One of the best things about Viewranger which they really don't push very well is their online route planning tool. https://my.viewranger.com/
