Asbestos: likelihood in 1900s house?

    So I’m planning to knock down my garden shed and after reading through some old threads I have researched and learned more about asbestos and now I am beyond paranoid.

    I live in a small house constructed circa 1900 with an extension build maybe 25/30 years ago.

    What is the likelyhood of any asbestos existing in the house? I’m literally afraid to breathe after hearing what it can do to your health.

    Interesting and equally depressing. Scary to think that it could still be in so many houses still and people are not aware of the dangers.

    Isn't asbestos only dangerous if you're exposed to the fibres? So if it's locked up in the walls or ceilings it doesn't pose a threat?

    It is only dangerous when it is cut or broken. If it is being disposed of a specialist waste remover is needed.

    There's asbestos everywhere. It's completely fine unless you're going to start putting a hammer through it. At that point it needs to be dealt with and disposed of by an expert.

    There's a lot of people living in houses and working in buildings with asbestos in them and it poses no threat whatsover.

    Companies involved in the removal of asbestos provide have to provide intensive training to staff. Not something to take it upon yourself tbh ...

    Remotest chance of asbestos in the original build. Look for it in later re-modelling, additions, extensions carried out over the lifetime of the building. Don't break or cut anything you suspect. Have an asbestos survey carried out for peace of mind.

    As previously mentioned, get an asbestos survey done before any renovations are done.It will give you piece of mind

    Thanks for the replies. The only renovation work I am planning to do myself right now is demolition of a small concrete shed, I don't know how I can know if the roof has asbestos in it or not. When I bought the house originally my surveyor said on the report that an Asbestos test costs approx 4k which is a huge amount of money for knocking down a small shed. Don't know what to do...

    Testing is no where near 4K. Jesus almighty. If the test shows positive and there is loads to remove then yes it might cost that or more to remove and get a cert. a typical asbestos corrugated sheet is roughly 650 euro to remove.
