    Given the day, an interesting article giving the timeline of the landings:


    "6,939 vessels – 1,213 warships, 4,126 landing craft, 736 ancillary craft and 864 merchant vessels – gathered in “Area Z” south of the Isle of Wight, in preparation for landings at five Normandy beaches, along 50 miles of the coast – Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword."

    Antont Beevor's book on D-Day is a great read.

    ".....he has made use of overlooked and new material from more than 30 archives in half a dozen countries. His skill with German archives (a former Hussars officer, he served in the British Army of the Rhine) is especially evident."
