    hi does any one know when it became law in Ireland to have a license for a public house ?

    Since at least 1634, when "An Act for Keepers of Ale-Houses to be bound by Recognizance" was passed by the Irish Parliament. That was the first generally-applicable law, but in many places before that local powers had the right to control licensed premises in many neighbourhoods - e.g. you couldn't open an ale-house in the City of Dublin without the permission of the City fathers; you couldn't have an ale-house in the Liberties without the permission of the Archbishop or the Abbot, etc.
