Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

It has been one peculiar year, there's no doubt but thankfully the Rock & Metal releases kept coming to keep us... somewhat, sane.

So with that said, what has been everybody's standout releases of 2020?

The Pineapple Thief - Versions of the Truth
    Pain of Salvation - Panther

Katatonia's City Burials as decent as well. Not a particularly strong year for my taste.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

House of Noise - Massive Wagons (awful name I know).

Really like this band, only got in to them this year.
Here is the first song from the album

Some good choices here. I haven’t got around to listening to the Fish album yet, must listen to it over the next few days

Would say Abyss by Unleash the Archers is my favourite album released this year along with:

    Joe Satriani - Shapeshifting
Alestorm - Curse of the Crystal Coconut
Black Stone Cherry - The Human Condition
    Corey Taylor - CMFT
    Joe Bonamassa - Royal Tea
    AC/DC - Power Up
    Myrkur - Folksange
Biffy Clyro - A Celebration of Endings
Bruce Springsteen - Letter to You

Not listened to much 'Rock' from this year, but I'd add Pearl Jam's Gigaton.

The only metal album that really grabbed me this year was Alphaville by Imperial Triumphant. Absolutely brilliant album IMO, maybe my number one from any genre.

Thought Ohms was decent, wouldn't put it as the best of the year.

Also enjoyed albums by Ulver and Myrkur, but they weren't really metal releases.

#1. Alestorm - Curse of the Crystal Coconut
The only saving grace for 2020 and the "pirate metal drinking crew" deserves to be toured far and wide.

I also enjoyed Anti-flag's 20:20 vision (or 20:20 di-vision reissue), the Bombpops were a solid slice of summer and Pig Destroyers EP in August summed up the second lockdown. Marilyn Masons new record was also worth a listen as was the Nofx vs Frank Turner split (mostly for Frank's take on "eat the meek"). However, unlike others here, I haven't much time for the new Deftones or AC-DC offerings as they didn't push the envelope as much as they normally do. Smashing Pumpkins new record tried, but failed.

It's a great shame that Fannybaws remains unplayed in front of live audiences.

I always love this thread for the suggestions and I've relistened to a few mentioned on here in case I didn't do them justice first time around. I have to say, that Mr Bungle album is epic!
As is the Cattle Decapitation tune, which I'm brand new to. Wow!

But given the number of votes here, can someone please explain what makes the Ohms album so good? I wouldn't even rate it as the best deftones release this year (Black stallion rocks ;)) nevermind album of the year? I'm clearly missing something and I don't know what "it" is.

I think this is the first year, in my life, as a fan of music where I've struggled to associate with new music - new release - specifically Rock/Metal and there hasn't been anything to say to me "I'm a new release, I deserve to be listened too" and I think a lot of that is because I've not had as many chances to listen to music, not taken as many journeys, not made as many sporadic trips to the record store. Not gone to as many gigs, seen as many acts and supports, that's really had an impact on me for sure.

For me Deftones are a band similar to Slipknot in that if they released a Greatest Hits package it would be one of the best albums ever...I usually love 4/5 songs from each of their albums but the rest is mostly filler for me. Ohms I think doesn't have the individual high points of some of their other albums but I think that each song is varied/different and quality and as an album doesn't have any filler.
