A female version of Colm Brophy. Could kick to touch better than Hugo Keenan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,742 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

Well done Neil, ripped her out a new one.

The sigh at the end confirmed the ripping of a new one.

Neil took her out with remarkable ease .. jacking up the word rate duddnt always work😲

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70,069 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

I'd imagine the sigh was echoed around the country - another FG waffler avoiding questions and mythmaking about 'everyone strugling'.

I think at this stage we are all struggling and not necessarily in the same way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70,069 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

Which is the point McInerney made and Neale waffled in reply.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,798 ✭✭✭ShamNNspace

No we are not.. Some are gettin on just mighty fine, a grand pandemic, bit of inflation no bother, immigration crisis, what crisis? keep that cheap Labour comin... another brandy there light a nice cigar only the best.. Just keep those doggies movin rawhide, rawhide 🎶wine and circuses for the masses keep them doped, but (P Flynn voice now) try keepin three houses goin with three housekeepers and the rest, let me tell you, its not easy, it's not easy, tell me about it we're all struggling baby

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70,069 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

Fair play to McInerney, she's a high earner herself but she didn't sit there agreeing with another smug high earner that we are all struggling the same.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,742 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

Richmond ripped her a new one to be honest.

When she tries to flash bang and up the word rate to warp speed, one knows she is done.

Thats a well known tactic of the Shinners beloved by Doherty, O ‘Reilly and Sherlock.

In all fairness she took a good tonking in that exchange.

Brophy was well able for her too.

Has any Fine Gaeler ever been interviewed who didn't rip out a new one on the interviewer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70,069 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

    😁

Cormac just interviewed Doherty there. Maybe Brendan could tell us who got ripped a new one?

    Get your bets ready!

Personally I think Cormac was as robust as I would expect an interviewer to be and Doherty, while not wholly convincing at least had the numbers and answers and didn't waffle.

Still tho, must have been a bit of a dose needing to report on the massive jump in salary her colleague was after getting when Sarah did a much better job 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56,707 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Appalling interviewer. You can be firm, fair and tough without what she does: She thinks shouting down and attack attack attack, butting in and not allowing free flowing discussion is what listeners want. All it does is shows her up as inept and agenda driven.

I find her, at times, dreadful. And that sighing at the end.. so disrespectful.

From Paxman to Kenny to Maitland to McInerney, those that interupt waffle, avoidance, and running down the clock will get the plaudits from me. The job of the journalist is not to sit there nodding when they know the strategy being used by the interviewee.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56,707 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Nonsense. Her whole agenda is attack attack. She doesn’t listen. You can be firm and fair without resorting to her exaggerated and contrived aggression . She’s useless. And she stymies structured debate and dialogue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70,069 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

Rubbish, and obviously you just zone in on one aspect. She has conducted many fine interviews which are respectful and revealing.

Faced with waffle/avoidance she also does her job. That's political interviewing the world over when it is conducted by honest journalists.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56,707 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Guaranteed if that was a shinners she kept interrupting you’d be swinging the other way.

and I’m well aware that she can interview without the attack approach. She only employs the contrived aggression for certain people in certain positions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70,069 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

She did exactly the same thing to Pearse Doherty the day after Richmond, robustly questioned him on what he was proposing, including, shock horror, interrupting him. Go listen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,742 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

Have to agree with the boy Walsh, described the shortcomings of McInerney expertly and the reaction from certain quarters to his posts, was of course no surprise.

Jacking up the word rate to warp speed is not a good interviewer technique, you will find that the more experienced and competent interviewers don’t need to adopt that rubbish.

I would have to say the whole Drivetime programme to me is badly produced, badly presented and tries to gives the impression that there is ‘good banter’ between the presenters.

There isn’t as is perfectly obvious, just a cacophony of false guffawing and stupid carry on that just doesn’t work-end of.

Is Neil Richmond the new Colm Brophy one has to ask? A straight talker who knows his brief and can put away the various trotters and others with ease.

Jaysus….blood on the floor in Montrose…..Carroll-McNeill just gutted and filleted O’hEadhra and Shorthall.

Ripped out new ones for both….outstanding performance.

Even that lad couldn’t t spin that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70,069 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

    I didn't hear it.

But if Carroll-McNeill was involved I will be dusting off my supply of the word 'waffle' no doubt. 😁

    What was being discussed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,675 ✭✭✭✭Galwayguy35

She sure did, I'm not even a FG voter but have to say it was impressive being able to list out facts and figures while fighting a battle on 2 fronts.

Pity they didn't keep her on to put Barry the little commie in his place later on as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,742 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

Destined for higher places, that little trotter Barry is on borrowed time.

Her command of the facts and figures while under pressure with generalities from Shortall was indeed impressive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,014 ✭✭✭Gen.Zhukov

The biggest issue I'd have with Jennifer Carroll MacNeill is that she'd unplug your life support machine to charge her phone, while whispering softly into your ear - 'Sorry about this, I'm expecting a very important call'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70,069 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

If her arrogance on display on the Tonight Show is anything to go by, she won't be attracting new voters to FG. I thought Leo was cold and unempathetic, but he's been outflanked. 😁

  • Is it just me or is the whole tone of that show way too non-newsy?

It always seems like it’s full of awkward dad joke type commentary and cutting to segments that are more like light entertainment.

I miss the solid news approach when it was presented by Mary Wilson.

Maybe it’s just my taste in radio style, but I just don’t like the current format.

Exactly what I was thinking, the "c'mere ta me" and the giggling and skittering should have no place in the Premier news show of the day.. With all that's happening in the world it shouldn't be hard to fill two hours, maybe even have an "independent" look at what's going on outside these borders and I don't mean the usual voices from the US and the EU who seem to be on speed dial in montrose

Agree totally, it’s gone to the dogs and almost unlistenable to.

You have that guffawing baboon O’hEadhra trying to wreck every cringeworthy effort to ‘do the banter’ It doesn’t fokking work

They are then peddling 51551 contact ab initio and trying to give the impression of ‘rivalry ‘ between the two presenters.

Its sinking into a swamp of bulldust and has now marinated into a cheap imitation of rubbish for the masses with nothing to do with good reportage.

Don’t like the production values and the presentation style Breener.

Mary Wilson could do a two hour show with no problem in the past, while not everyone’s cup of tea, she got through it without the dumbing down and cringeworthy bolloxology that goes on on the current presentation.

Nobody give a fohherke what either O’hEadhra or McInerney have for their meals, what they sleep in, how they get ready for work etc etc.

Id suggest that a well read well educated professional like yourself,Breener, would probably agree but not express in such crude language.

Apologies for the tone of the language but those inserts at 1655 boil my pïss bigtime.

Flattery will get you everywhere, Brenner!

I didn't much like Mary Wilson, but her show was much better than this one.

Mary was better. And thought Sarah was good on her own when she replaced Sean O’Rourke. But this stuff is awful and seems to be getting worse. Happy clappy, fake laughter, text us now on 51551.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,843 ✭✭✭Brian Scan

Agree on Sarah, though she can get a bit carried away with what the Brenner might call the "flash bang" stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,742 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

I took a look at Tonight VMTV recently and there was a presenter called Claire Brock on it.

She had a panel on it.. four persons.

Now I had never heard of her prior to this event and I have to say she was extremely professional, controlled the panel expertly and all with a calm assurance of a well trained professional.

None of the flash banging looking for a head stuff of the “hang on now…hang on” beloved of O’h’Eadhra, just calm probing questions which gave the viewer a good insight into the nub of the question.

Was very impressed based on a small sample!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,675 ✭✭✭✭Galwayguy35

The Ukrainian who's brother is fighting on the front line came across very well, she was very patient considering it was O Hara interviewing her.

"How do you feel?" , how the hell does he think she feels when her brother is in danger every day.

  • My view of it is it’s not the presenters. It’s the style of the show is all wrong for that main, flagship, heavy news programme.

It’s always been a heavy weight, flagship current affairs programme and I expect it to be fairly in-depth, serious and willing to give time to deeper analysis and so on.

RTE have a well resourced and very competent news gathering team, and access to a very broad range of guests simply because they are a public service broadcaster of significant stature, even if Ireland is a relatively small country.

That show should be 3 hours of RTE showing what it can do in terms of news and current affairs. It shouldn’t be going anywhere near light entertainment/banter. Leave that to someone else! It’s not why I tune into RTE R1 for a key news show.

    "How do you feel?"

or 'how did you feel?' seems to be a staple question of all in RTE. It's Miriam's stock question to anyone who has been involved in tragedy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,675 ✭✭✭✭Galwayguy35

Surprised she hasn't been headhunted by the national broadcaster, probably on a decent enough salary but doubt it is anywhere near what the crowd over in RTE are paying their presenters.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,742 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

Yes, you are correct there, however the presenters should have enough cahunas to tell those in charge to basically fooherke off with that format. It’s stupid and doing their careers no good at all.

They tried the same with John Murray back in the day and screwed up his career big time when he was tipping along nicely.

I'll tell you what annoys me Cormac, it's shyte like this taking up time on the nation's Premier daily radio News show, that and sayin "c'mere ta me" every other sentence

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,742 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

Absolutely correct, it’s an total disgrace to allow rubbish like this have any part of a supposedly premier daily radio news show.

O’hEadhra in my opinion seems to think that the nation has any interest in what annoys him,

    News for ya pal………

Time this shambolic production was taken off the air and replaced with a proper production which the listening public can enjoy.

A challenge for them… start hawking a 51551 callin to see if people think this fcukkery around 1655 and 1755 is ‘entertaining’ or a load of codswallop…..

And get that guffawing baboon off the air.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70,069 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

Thought Cormac did extremely well unpicking the Protocol stuff and the various opinions of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,843 ✭✭✭Brian Scan

That's the type of thing he should be doing, Francie, not the other sh1te,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70,069 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

The producers and RTE obviously think this magazine type programme fits that slot.

They need to balance what they do better.

Just saying he is a good interviewer/journalist when he is allowed to be. I.E. I would blame the producers, who control the content, rather than the presenters.

Personally I would prefer them to alternate the days and present on their own, both are competent enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,843 ✭✭✭Brian Scan

    Agreed about the producers,

Neither of them are light-hearted enough to do light-hearted stuff; Cormac, in particular, is like someone who heard about humour but didn't really grasp the concept. The "banter" between the two would make you cringe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,742 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

Correct Breener , as I pointed out in the thread on an earlier post, those behind the scenes must take responsibility.

As you pointed out having a rehearsed happy five minutes at 1655 and sometimes 1755 on some stupid theme is indeed cringeworthy.

They tried the same with John Murray and it took them five years to figure out it didn’t work and disrupted the lads career.

They could do the same with the Drivetime two and I’d blame themselves for allowing producers to try to wedge them into shoes that blatantly don’t fit.

It just doesn’t work……when will they realise that….. 5 years time when the sponsorship is pulled due to falling audience?
