Erm, always been a fan of the Stukas. (The classic photo being this one )
They're ugly but mean as fk @ the same time- like the modern A-10.

A close second for the Messerschmit (spelling?) Me-262
Far's I know they were the 1st full-production jet fighter back in 1941 but there weren't enough for them to make any real impact. Shows how far ahead they were, they were messing about with jet engines far back as 1939. Of course the allies were quick to imitate like the BritishMeteor but really the first jet-powered dogfights didn't materialise until Korea.

As for ugly, well, no wonder dey lost dah bloody wah!

hmmm i have always been quite a fan of Flying boats, transport and bombers than fighters!

But to be honest WW1 planes float my boat more than WW2.

The likes of the sopwith pup and camel are classics and the Foker E11 the first real fighter!

The sexy Japanese Zero A6M2 type 21

    Pic1
    Pic2
(each pic is about 250k, hence links rather than image)

None of your green planes for me thanks.

I quite like the Spitfire (better plane than the Zero judging by combat between the two), the Camels were a favourite since reading Biggles as a nipper. I'll stick with the Pearl Harbor plane though.

the p-51 was the porsche or the sky.

ugliest, but one of the best was the P-47 "Jug" Thunderbolt. Damn ugly but seeing as how they built 15,683 of them they must have been doin something right :)

A total of 1,715 Hurricanes flew with Fighter Command during the period of the Battle, far in excess of all other British fighters combined. Having entered service a year before the Spitfire, the Hurricane was "half-a-generation" older, and was markedly inferior in terms of speed and climb. However, the Hurricane was a robust, manoeuvrable aircraft capable of sustaining fearsome combat damage before write-off; and unlike the Spitfire, it was a wholly operational, go-anywhere do-anything fighter by July 1940. It is estimated that its pilots were credited with four-fifths of all enemy aircraft destroyed in the period July-October 1940.

Also since it had unstressed covering largely of frabic it was much easier & quicker to repair than the Spitfire.

Ah the Fieseler Fi 156 Storch (Stork)
Could take off in 65m and land in 20m- not bad for a plane 9.9m long !
Could hover into a 25mph headwind too..

Also, it is true to say that the Hurricane was a better wepons platform then the Spitfire, as it was slightly more stable and had the guns arranged differently, which increased their efficency.
I think I can agree, to an extent about the storch, espically if one can resist any temptation to judge by any other classification apart from apperence.

Without doubt, one of the most beautiful planes of WWII:
    The Gotha Go 229

The replacement for the B29 - this was to have been used against Germany if England was invaded
    46060102.jpg

You can understand the nickname "aluminium overcast"
    boneyard.jpg
They were the main US bomber -383 made - until replaced by the B52

[edit - changed for smaller color photo]

Worst looking, though a slightly cool idea, the Focke Wulf Triebflügel:
