Got a 486 portable from an antique store. It started fine the first time but afterwards it wont and I suspect the psu. I cannot find a replacement online, so was wondering if it can be repaired? If so, anybody aware of someone in the Dublin area that may be able to take a look?

The machine looks like this: http://kishy.ca/?p=55

Looks nice - thats a 286 you linked to not 486 though - that correct?

Usually with old stuff - its capacitors or fuse or a broken connection - you could be lucky - my bet is those yellow square caps in the photo.
    - but often with power supply's, that can be a big thing to repair as when one component in the psu goes - it can take out several more - and they are kinda dangerous to work with (thousands of volts in there).

If it was me, and there was a lot of damage to the psu, I would be looking to hollow out the PSU metal case and replace the guts of the psu with a new one... or leaving it and extending the wires out to power it externally from a psu brick.

Yes, mine is a 486, but it looks exactly like the 286. I guess it was upgraded at some point. The external PSU sounds interesting - I will investigate some more, thanks!
