I'm always open to correction, but I think going backwards is the wrong move. According to this article, WWII sits in 8th as the best selling CoD, behind MW3, BO, BO2, Ghosts?!, BO3, MW2 and AW (in that order). It's been done to death, and personally, I'd much prefer more AW or IW, but I'm an exception to the rule apparently. MW4 this year will show going backwards is a bad idea imo.

COD WW2 was a bit crap though to be fair. A perfectly playable game, but pretty uninspired and by-the-numbers. The campaign was also really poor for such a high-profile franchise, one of the worst of all the COD titles. I had been really looking forward to the return to WW2 but it was a major disappointment....came out almost a decade after COD:WAW and managed to be an inferior game in all aspects.

See, WAW did something original, or at least it felt 'new'. WWII felt like a remaster, and didn't do anything new. At least AW/IW/BO3 went forward and introduced new mechanics. Just remake 1/2/3 and put it as 1 game.

Sure they could set Black Ops 5 back in ancient Rome and it wouldn't make a blind bit of difference considering they have dropped campaign from the franchise :D Though a Coldwar setting does sound promising if they do bring the SP back, I'm sure Woods & Mason were up to all sorts of cool **** during that time haha

This is due to people believing the BlOps series was better than the rest, and it wasn't. Sledgehammer made Advanced Warfare, and it's one of the best in the series imo, but at the time too many people jumped on the Cod Hate bandwagon and didn't give it a chance. Yeah, it had 'Call of Duty' attached to it, but on it's own it was a fantastic game, and I'm pretty sure it's not too far behind MW2 as my most played one. Everything about it was amazing, and I nearly constantly had a smile playing it.

But no, the general populace just hated it immediately and because of that we got a clone the following year, Black Ops 3, and it was nearly universally loved, and while it was the best of the BlOps series imo, it wasn't as good as AW. And people were ok with this, because it had 'Black Ops' on it. Joke.

It's a shame to see Sledgehammer only supporting now. While WWII didn't do it for me, it did for a lot of people (just felt stale to me, it technically looked good).

Seems that when Condrey left Activision he went to 2K games and took a lot of developers with him from Sledgehammer Raven where the actual lead studio on Cod 2020 the Cold war setting is confirmed but both studios bickered over the development. I believe Treyarch were brought in as they managed to basically get Black Ops 4 over the line in around 6 months after Activision rejected the overwatch type gameplay. That's why Blops 4 MP is so poor.
This whole fiasco will have a knock on affect on Black Ops 4 support expect more old cod maps coming out and it will put pressure on Infinity Ward as they will need to start working immediately on a game for 2021 so I would worry about MW4 support after launch if we are gone to a 2 year cycle.
Worrying times for all the fans of the franchise
