Got one a couple of weeks ago. Camping in the southern mountains looks pretty good.

Great spot. Make sure to get your visa sorted though. Has to be done in London which is a pain.

    In person or through post?

    Post.

Several years ago around 2010 they would only allow in person. Absolute nightmare. Just checked the embassy site there. Good news.

    - Starting from January 1, 2017 Nationals of the UK, Ireland, Iceland and other 42 countries can visit Kazakhstan without visa for up to 30 calendar days.

Anyone thinking of going? If so you are best to book an internal flight with air Astana and fly to Almaty for all the Craic.

If you go I'd recommend to visit Charyn Canyon on a day trip from Almaty and you can also go to Kyrgyzstan further south without a visa (visa on arrival I think) and visit Issyk Kul lake. Mountains in Kyrgyzstan are amazing. You could go further south again in Kyrgyzstan to Karakol too. For €190 it's quite a bargain, would love to go back!

What sort of money are internal flights running?

I am interested in going if a few could meet up.

About one hundred euro return. Make sure to pay in KZT on air Astana site otherwise they charge you about 300Usd

Is Kazakhstan really worth a visit?

Is it expensive? How's the food? Nightlife? Not much about it online

    Is it safe ?

    (not a Marathon Man reference)

I'm seriously considering this and I've made peace with the fact that it would not be a gastronomie trip for me (I'm a vegetarian) but how badly would someone struggle with just pidgin Russian?

Most young people (30) speak some English or German. You would get around ok. Safe city. Usual precautions apply.

It's about 50% cheaper than Dublin.

The better half's family is from Kazakhstan. Might check the pennies for this. She tells of idyllic summers in beautiful countryside.

You would be lucky to bump into one of those 30 people.
