They are a few lbs difference at most. Donovan has 13 fights now. About 9 these above 126...some above 130 lbs..

I hear what you're saying, no two weight differences are the same, it obviously wasn't as bad as GGG vs Kelly Brook, but I just dont agree with it. It's dangerous. I'd say Eric has a sore head today.

Just saw Dillian Whyte is interviewed by Brian Rose on London Real this week. A bit surprised as he normally does business podcasts and hasn't had many sports stars on before. Will I post a link for you Norman?

He could have had a sorer head had he fought many “smaller” men.

Barret is not a big puncher..Eric simply not able to take a decent shot. Was hurt several times by several decent shots. Add this to his lack of pro survival skills, lack of real stamina, and lack of any power to retaliate and discourage Barret, and this is why he lost..

We’re debating lbs here and there...both men pretty much same size overall...

Good win for Paddy Donovan earlier. Our best prospect you'd have to think.

He got caught and was hurt, tired, unable to defend..that is why he lost.

Not because of a possible couple lbs here and there..

    Very similar sized men.

The size wasn’t the issue. He wasn’t being bulled around, roughed up, manhandled...

He simply could not take the shots from Barret, who is not at all that much a hitter...

Like I said, Donovan is a decent sized FW and SFW...he is not at all small at 130 lbs. 35 for chrissake. Not 22/23...126-130 ten years ago..

And he has been 3 lbs above 130 in a fight...

I do think 4 lbs can have a difference, but not in all cases, any when one man is 35, 5 feet 7 and who has fought above the weight class that he fought last night..

There are instances where 4 lbs can look like ten lbs...A small sized man at one weight moves up to fight a big sized man at the higher weight....

Your first sentence is correct, he was tired, he got caught and was hurt. He then didn't have anything to keep Barrett off and prevent him from landing the shots to finish it.

However it was a draining fight. It mightn't have seemed it because they weren't fighting in a phonebooth all night, but there was a huge amount of feinting, quickly darting in and out with the feet and constantly moving while trying to react and counter at speed.
If Donovan's shots had more of an effect on Barrett he could have stopped Barrett's surge (he seemed to make a conscious decision from the 6th onwards to press forwards), and slowed the tempo once he had Barrett backing up.......but he couldn't back him up.

Barrett's no Julian Jackson, but he's not a non puncher, he can crack a bit......and that will have more of an effect on a natural Featherweight like Donovan is not short at 130 lbs, but he's definitely small at the weight, you could see the difference in the thickness of their builds, and Barrett usually looks like a rake compared to his opponent.

Donovan weighed 133 in his 2nd pro fight, he had just turned over. He doesn't struggle that badly to make 126 lbs, and if it was 10 years ago he turned over, I reckon he'd be down at Super-Bantameight.
If Zelfa Barrett is still fighting at Donovan's age, I'd be shocked if he wasn't up at Lightweight (or above).

Anyway, we can argue those points till the cows come home. Donovan has already said he'll be back, but at Featherweight.

Michael Conlan up soon, so plenty of time for you to talk about his lack of power among his other flaws 😅.
I do agree about his power btw....

Does anyone know why Ofori here came out to Irish music? Of course maybe he just likes it

Big, we’ll see with Eric and what he comes back at...

Not sure why he’d be back..

For what? To take unnecessary punishment? Too old now for this game, as well as clearly lacking the ingredients for it..

I was wondering that myself, he has the Shamrock on his gloves and all !

We will of course, but I'd be very surprised if his next fight isn't at least against a Featherweight (if not actually at Featherweight).
Matchroom and Sky seem to have been very impressed by how he's handled himself in and out of the ring this week.
If they take him as a 'home' fighter going forward I can see why there's value in staying on.

His goal when he turned pro was to win the European title.
Down at Featherweight, and with Matchroom backing, I don't see that as being that crazy a goal in the next couple of years before he hangs them up.

Well, matchroom are full a hyped up sh1te, Big...

The way Hearn was waffle last night you’d swear Barrett was the next Roberto fooking Duran!!

Well that's true, however Eddie will have the last laugh with him selling decent crowds in the Manchester Arena once Covid issues are solved.
Regardless of ability he'll probably manoeuver him into winning a World title at some point too.....if he did it for Crolla !

I should have twigged on the Shamrocks/Irish music.
They're really pushing the Irish angle in the states for this card. Even Sharpe had red Shamrocks on his gloves.
So I'm guessing Ofori probably has no Irish link despite the music.

    What MC weigh in at?

His expecting to campaign at 122 tells me his team have no real confidence at 126 or higher..

122 for MC now, who is 29 in a few months will be a real tough ask to make..

Ok, MC 126 on the scales...and ripped to shreds looking at the pics

I suppose the big question is how much water did he have to lose to weigh in at that.
If not a huge amount 122 lbs should be fine.
But if he had anything close to his normal cut, 122 lbs is going to be a huge ask, he looks extremely lean at the moment !

    He does look big here..

The 122 talk...his battle may be harder just making that weight..

This French lad has next to nothing to offer..

Fed up to the tits with these MC mismatches.

Some time soon someone will tag Conlon and iron him out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56,620 ✭✭✭✭walshb

    Here is the problem..

Nobody will ask why it took MC so long to take out a clearly inferior opponent.

    I’d like to be positive...but......

Here goes. Good stamina, good body work....

But against a complete non threat...

Misses too much shots and cannot close the show....

If we are taking about world level and world beating, these are the questions that need asking...

He’s well into his career...this is him. Today, tomorrow and going forward..

Did any pundit even mention how clearly weak the foe was?

Odd comment...any boxer is likely to be ‘tagged and ironed out’...his record and performances to date prove this isn’t likely to happen any time soon, what is it exactly you know?

Easy now, don't you know it's Saturday night and the self-loathing crowd are well oiled and.... they just can't help themselves.

Angelo Leo at 122 is a very winnable fight for Mick. Aggressive come forward fighter who can easily be outboxed. Think Mick has shown he has a gas tank and he'll have the size at 122 to win that one. Won't be easy mind.

Conlan be massive at 122 with hydration. 132-135 in the ring.

Rawling said MC said he can make 122 “easily..“

So, why is he 126 and rippped to shreds?

What are your views on the fight tonight?

    Have you heard of boxrec?

Actually, forget that. Have you watched the opponents?

No disrespect, but are you on a windup?

MC is 3.5 years in now and has fought nobody...very carefully managed..

Not saying he should have been fighting top rated lads from day 1, but to date, not a single opponent r t you could call quality, or even close to it..Yes, pretty weak opposition..the lad tonight was dire...record or not. Old, stale and smaller man who lasted two rds with Josh Warrington..

Ok, so you were on a windup...

Asking ridiculous questions like who were the weak opponents MC fought?

His whole career to date has been against weak opposition, and even he'd tell you that...

He'll definitely be killing himself to get to 122. Always think he looks quite gaunt in the face when making 126 even. 122 is a fairly weak division at the moment though so it's the sensible move.

Thought tonight was standard enough Conlan tbh. Won easy without looking spectacular. He's decent at nearly everything without being elite at anything. You'd hope he can find an extra gear or two as he goes up the levels really.

reckon they messed up as conlan came out to same song. Also show how feather fisted conlan is when it only took josh warrington 2 rounds to get that guy out and warrington is not known for his punching power.

    My view as well..

Just not seeing that type explosive fight and action that I expect from top class smaller weight fighters..

He just comes across a little laborious, ponderous and forced...

Maybe my standards are too high, but top class smaller fighters for me should have that real zip, speed, explosiveness and savagery...

MC just doesn’t seem to have it. That lad last night was really weak, yet MC couldn’t put any clear type beating on him..It just felt like he had to try so hard to do any damage..

Yes. His lack of power will be his undoing at the highest level.

Yes. His lack of power will be his undoing at the highest level.

He didn't even need "power," just accurate and decent enough clean shots.....

He was missing with so many....

Josh Warrington is not a big hitter, but got that lad out of there in no time....

Improved speed, snap and a little extra spite is what is needed......nothing to do with raw power.....

If the foe was any use I'd reconsider; the guy was desperately weak and poor....he really was.....
