Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

What's the scam?

    Asking for a friend.

Went to see private seller from Donedeal. 2010 car, selling for 3K, top spec in terms of add ons. Car seemed fine.

    Friend agreed to buy

Next day friend asked seller for reg of car for insurance. Seller supplied different reg to the vehicle that was viewed.

New reg belonged to a car which was same model and year but without the full spec.

When questioned on different reg the seller got thick and hung up

What could the scam be here? Bait and switch? But on a low value car is that likely?

If your friend already knew the reg. from the viewing, why did he have to phone the seller afterwards to get it?

Apologies - I took a shortcut as I'm typing on a phone. Friend's sister is the person buying the car, she hadn't taken a note of the ref so asked seller as she needed to transfer insurance.

Friend noticed it had changed from a WX ref to MH reg

I don't believe the seller has 2 similar cars.
Possibly selling a stolen car. Stuck a set of plates matching a similar car than isn't stolen hoping you would Do your checks off that reg and come back clean.

Hopefully nobody needs telling to run away quickly.

Got a link to the car advert OP? If the car is cheaper than similar examples then it's usually for a reason.

It was slightly cheaper than similar but nothing crazy.

He removed the ad the same night it was viewed

3k for a high spec 2010 car sounds a bit on the cheap side to me.

Seems the most likely, or possibly some history of write-off or crash repairs.

Lucky escape. Obviously chassis number not checked or any other basic checks done?
