At the rate things are being postponed, it could do great by dint of being the only big release showing in the first place

Be great if all the special effects guys were just sitting there bored and so started playing around with fitting as much extra into it that they could :D

August 28th 2020 is the latest date for release.

I don't seriously believe any major release will hit cinemas in the next 3 months. America has exploded in cases and spiralling out of control, studios would be mad to put anything into cinemas ATM.

This actually looks like a lot of fun I wonder what the age rating is going to be?

Its a pity that Disney can't just fling this up onto Disney+ at this point.
Its a bit frustrating that they have an insanely large catalogue of content to offer (Fox) and choose not to stream it because it doesn't mesh with their Disney+ family brand. I await the announcement of a Fox streaming service at some point (minus Star Wars and Simpsons).

They already have 4 X-Men films on Disney+ here.

It may be as simple as being down to rights issues this was made before the takeover and the first run rights may have been sold on already to different markets.

Film like this needs the box office exposure and revenue it won't be classified a success based on how many Disney+ subs it generates as it's be lost in the ocean of content. Film definitely looks very dark and very interesting I would like to see a sequel done like the twist at the end of Split one solitary reference opens world's of possibilities.

I know, but not things like Deadpool or Logan for example. I'm actually surprised they even included the ones you mentioned, they are oddly selective (maybe because they fall under "superheroes"?!)
Mainly I was talking about all of the Fox catalogue though (which is mighty and varied), not just the X-titles.

Disney+ is a service designed entirely for children and families. Everything on it is ‘family friendly’ - even with Hamilton, their biggest release yet, they cut out two of three ‘****s’ so it’d still be PG-13. You won’t be seeing anything like Logan or Deadpool on it unless there’s a massive, fundamental change in how they’re approaching the service.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,298 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

I assumed they would just use Disney+ for the more kid friendly ones and Hulu for the less kid friendly ones.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,891 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

Hulu is due to expand worldwide over the next two years however like HBO Max doing the same I wonder will ongoing deals with Sky here effect that expansion arriving here.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Disney had form enough with their own old stuff and the practice of "vaulting" classics to cause demand or scarcity. Would simply assume the same tactic will be applied to their Disney+ stable TBH....

The possibility has been raised that international releases might start occurring before the US. Definitely see an uptick in same day online releases too.

Has any completed or near completed film that has had a delay like this or longer done well at the cinema?

    Another new trailer.

I think they might be secretly releasing the film in trailer form there are so may trailers now.

At this stage I think everyone knows the plot and storyline off by heart lol.

Does look good regardless but just release the bloody thing.

AFAIK they still haven't actually shown Wolfsbane which is odd.

Apparently they're contractually obliged to release this one in theatres. So release any time soon in them is likely a loss maker.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,298 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

I think I only watched the first trailer or 2 as this is one I do plan on seeing.

If the delays go on any longer, it or any possible sequel will have to just be titled The Mutants

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,891 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

The last trailer before it hits the US cinemas next Friday.

Ah a decent shot of Lockheed at last :D

Thought Yana had her horns there at the start :(

So apparently Disney won't be sending screeners to outlets for review; professional reviews will have to be via a visit to the cinema. A tactic that's not generally considered a stirring endorsement from the studio. At least, this is what's claimed here:

    https://film.avclub.com/the-new-mutants-finally-opens-this-week-here-s-why-we-1844833667
    [...]
A few days ago, we reached out to Disney and were informed by representatives of the studio that they would not be providing press with either an advance screening of the film or a digital review link.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,255 ✭✭✭The White Wolf

It wouldn't be the first case of a studio being aware of a turkey in their hands, yet it never stopped them from providing critics with advanced screenings.

TBH I'm stuck in two minds between poor form on Disney's part, and being dubious towards some of these outlets refusing to review.

I'd need to know more. I'd assume Disney have not applied this decision to all critics, but rather have applied it to reviewers on the fringe such as Indiewire and AV Club. If that's the case I wouldn't be absolutely against it, as the art has become a bit lost in recent years.

To be frank if these sites want their content to be valued they can get up off their arse and brave the cinema visit just like the rest of us. In the grand scheme of things their opinion isn't that important.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,298 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

    It finally released!

Though reviews aren't too positive. By that I mean 23% on RT

Disney's refusal to provide screeners or properly safely-distanced preview screenings has probably helped ensure that the first few days of reviews are middling at best.

I wanted this to be good, not least because the cast is good and the premise could be decently different to a lot of other superhero stuff, but all indications are that it's another muddled, middling X-men film :/

The reviews I've read so far have expressed confusion over why it was so long delayed in the first place; that rather being the turkey the reshoots and critic blocking implied, it's a perfectly ok, middling movie.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,298 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Didn't they deny the reshoots were a thing?
And the delays were due to clashes and mergers and pandemics

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,314 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

I am tempted to go and see this Sunday in cibeworld on Parnell but every showing it greyed out....it can't be sold out surely?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,891 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

Some reviewers in the States have declined to review after watching it.

    Ouch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,137 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

Can we talk about it yet? Has anyone else seen it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 338 ✭✭RodVelvet

Seen it this evening, Underwhelming is how I would describe it. Can't understand why this kept getting delayed.

Saw it yesterday and it's a stone cold turkey. It looks cheap, like it was made for peanuts(although the budget was apparently $70million). The acting is very wooden, they've thrown in a lesbian story arc for what reason I dont know, and the dialogue is painful to listen to. Avoid.

It takes a lot for me to want to walk out of the cinema, honestly don’t know if I’ve ever done it. Usually I see it as a cinema experience ( Nice to be out) and I sort of want to see if the movie improves or remains consistently awful.

I was ready to walk out of that movie. The nearest closest awful comparison I can remember was the twilight movie with the wedding. That ended up being funny it was so bad, fair few people walked out on that.

But this was just god awful. Asides from the scary looking lad at the end it has no redeemable quality.

Starting to think about going back to the cinema and this might be the first film in at least 6 months I will have seen in one. I did not realise what it was about untill today and am excited about it now.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Just saw this today. It's ****e to be honest. Very formulaic. Feels like the intended audience are teenagers but written by adults who don't know how to write for younger generation. Wikipedia says the budget was $67-80m. Where did the money go? The entire film takes place in one location. It was ****ing tedious.

It might have worked as a mini-series with more character development and less CGI but what do I know.

I can see why Disney/Marvel were so reluctant to release this, especially if they have their own plans to introduce the X-men to the MCU. It actually reminded me of the Generation X TV movie from the early 90’s, but where as that had an ‘I can’t believe these characters are on the screen’ factor going for it this doesn’t even have that because there have been so many superhero movies.

There are some enjoyable bits, mainly little nods to the source material
Essex Corporation, Lockheed, Cecilia Reyes (even if she was shoehorned in as a villain) and I did enjoy the final Dark Soulsesque battle, especially the scene with Magik walking down the corridor as it began.

Can’t really say much about the rest of it though. I think Maisie Williams is the highlight and nails Rahne, Magik is right in places and completely off character in others, and the main actress playing Dani is absolutely terrible. Sam and Bobby don’t really get enough time to be anything more than typical background characters you find in these movies.

Every time I read a thread about the latest Marvel movie someone goes ‘but where were X during all this?’ and I always think it’s a silly detail to get caught up on but during this all I could think of was
how could Xavier not know about the hospital and done something about it
    or failing that
if Colossus knew his sister was out there surely he would go rescue her.

Saw this last night. It was alright.

Gigs '24 - Ben Ottewell and Ian Ball (Gomez), The Jesus & Mary Chain, The Smashing Pumpkins/Weezer, Pearl Jam, Green Day, Stendhal Festival, Forest Fest, Electric Picnic, Pixies, Ride, Therapy?, Public Service Broadcasting, IDLES(x2), And So I Watch You From Afar

I'm ngl, I was pleasantly surprised by this one. I enjoyed it and had fun with it.
I think my low expectations helped but I still liked it quite a bit.

I did a full review here where I went into more detail if anyone would care to check it out, actual review starts at 2.30.

I just watched this and my overwhelmingly reaction was "how the **** did this cost $80 million?"

Everything - from the quality of the acting, to the way it's shot and the CGI - looks like a TV pilot.

I mean 80% of the movie takes place in rooms and corridors. The acting is mostly god-awful, like stilted South American soap opera style in the case of the main character. She is unspeakably awful, how she got the starring role in a major blockbuster.....

The lad from Stranger Things is the only actor that put in a decent turn.

Anna Taylor Joy alternates between sounding like Stalin and a high-school cheerleader depending on how arsed she seems to be in any particular scene.

Maisie Williams looks like she dressed up as Deirdre Barlow for Halloween.

I cannot understand how they spent so much money, or on what exactly. It's actually baffling.

The movie is absolutely terrible. Like something you would have seen 20 years ago direct-to-DVD on the bottom shelf in Blockbuster.

    It is definitely extremely poor.

Anya Taylor Joy is a terrific actress but yes awful in this.

No idea how that money was spent either.
It looked cheaper than a tv show. There was a mutant type tv show a few years back called the gifted it wasn't perfect but it looked much better than this utter trash.

I'm surprised they gave the same director..the stand tv show!

Kind of want to watch this just to see if it lives up to all the negative hype now . These reviews are pretty damning !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,137 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

I forgot to come back here lol. I liked the cast for the most part. Didnt care for the role Reyes was shoehorned into and thought Moonstars actress was woeful. The other 4 mutants I thought all looked the part and were mostly well acted (Taylor-Joy and Heaton both dropped their accents at a few points).

    The story was abysmal.

What did I just watch? I wouldn't buy this on VHS

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,298 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Whatever about the one playing Dani. Her dad was probably the worse one in it, in that opening scene.

Overall, I thought it was better than I expected. It did feel like it didn't belong on the big screen and felt like the pilot to a series.
One thing I always find funny about these kinds of things is current patients/prisoners never find out what the others have done to get them here, despite knowing them for months/years but suddenly when the new person arrives everyone reveals everything within the space of a day.

    I do wonder why
Magick didn't just teleport outside the dome

Of course the thing I really didn't get was why were they watching Buffy out of order? Watching season 6's The Body before watching season 4's Hush?
