Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue.     Update on my new (to me) GTI PP.

    Had it out on some twisty roads in Connemara over the weekend and so got a chance to floor it a few times. To say I had a smile on my face would be an understatement. It was incredible, power just keeps coming. I know that you get used to extra power but it really feels like there's enough there for most any type of driving I'm going to be doing. I haven't tried the standard GTI brakes but the upgraded PP ones feel excellent.

    I also love keyless, ACC and the reversing camera. And herself is happy because it has the dual zone climate control.

    One very very happy GTI owner.

    Give it a few weeks any you'll be wondering about a tune...if I thought the dealer wouldn't mind I'd have it done already.

    Glad you're enjoying it. Don't forget to get those exhaust tips cleaned and polished too, it makes a nice difference to the back end when they're all shiny and chrome! Witness me!

    There's also the fact you can put a catback and airbox into them and it livens them up without even needing a tune. Gets rid of the initial lethargy feeling they have as standard in low RPM before the turbo spools.

    It's also more an insurance issue than dealer, warranty aside. Although you can but ask to see what they would say. ;)

    Everyone keeps saying that alright! We'll see. Worries about the clutch going and obviously the remote chance of insurance problems are the only things that would put me off.

    One thing I've noticed over my old diesel car is that everything moves faster, including the fuel gauge :rolleyes:.

    Also slightly annoyed that I can't seem to find the performance monitor on mine, just the eco blue monitor. Seems it was a bit of a lottery if you got it or not around 2016 models and the dealers don't really know how to enable it because it takes a full flash of the MIB2. I'll be looking at an Android Auto based solution like this once I get the dozy dealer to enable app connect.

    Manual. I suppose you just need to add in the price of a clutch into the cost of doing the map :)

    It is built in but if it's not specced, it needs to be enabled by the dealer with a code. Costs 300 or something for the license key. I knew to check and insisted the dealer did it as part of the deal, but of course he forgot to tell the service department so have to go back on Friday.

    Ah yeah, I'm not worried about it, I had factored it in. To be honest, mpg wasn't too bad (stayed above 30 all the way) considering how I was driving it!

    I don't have the performance monitor either, i think early 2016 cars didn't have it. You can enable the off road menu via VCDS which is similar.

    Near enough Lough Corrib alright? I went out around the loop of Spiddal, Moycullen and Barna with a few detours.

    Back from looking at a 161 ST Cupra 290 for €27k. 35km on the clock. Minimum value was really low so it worked out at €470, not much less than the 181 models I was looking at. I was expecting it to be around €380-420.

    The pre-facelift isn't quite as nice but still the same beast. The power is just unbelievable. That's the end of Cupra shopping for now, I'll get a deposit together and revisit next year.

    Just spotted this online (my GTI alerts are still active). Looks like a seriously good price.

    Mileage is a little high maybe and outside the main dealer network, but looks a couple of grand cheaper than other examples. 161, Nice high spec, PP and less than €24,000.

    I think that car belonged to someone on here, who traded it to Colm Quinn’s about a year ago. So it’s been moved on again within a year.

    I'd say it's harder sell in a 3 door.

    I would have thought it would sell quickly as there are so few 3 door performance Golf’s out there.

    I haven’t heard of any.
    I would have bought one if the spec was better, it’s just too close to a PP Gti for far more money.

    That red Gti linked above could be turned into a very nice handling car for not much money.
    Stick some ohlins suspension on it, stage 2, big brakes and it would be brilliant.

    It's a bit cheaper than average for a few reasons:

    - outside the VW dealer network - not really a bad thing if the car checks out. VW dealers charge a nice premium for their "Das Welt" nonsense.
    - miles a bit higher than average
    - manual
    - 3 doors - Neil makes very valid point that this should be a plus point from the sellers point of view, but dealers don't think like way, and the fact is, they don't want them.

    Mileage wouldn't put me off if keeping the car long term. They are well built cars and well able for the mileage. I bought my GTD with 95 kms on it and it's tight as a button and there's 115 kms on it now. I know diesels are different but I remember my old mk5 GTi had 160 kms on it when I sold it and it still drove really well.

    For me anyway there was a good bit of piece of mind buying from a main dealer even with all the good advice I'd gotten here :D

    Whether or not the car is actually in better nick, it just means I can go back to the local VW dealer and have things covered which for me is worth the premium. Maybe for my second or third GTI I'll be a bit braver..

    Mapfre is touch and go to be honest. You're lucky you've found a dealer that works with them and the level of items the cover isn't next nor near what a Das Welt warranty covers. They are grand if you aren't expecting to get into too much trouble like.

    Depends on the car. It needs to have full service history though as far as I know. Could be €300/€500. We got the last car with about 12mts manufacturer warranty and the dealer agreed to give us another 12mts once that finished with mapfre.
    It has to be main dealer serviced. That doesn't mean it needs to be the same brand, so let's say Volvo serviced your BMW that would be ok as far as I know.

    Mccoymotors im guessing. Spotted that on their site. I was actually watching the 4drive st that they had.
    I am tempted by above but then would wonder should I have waited out for another 4drive.
    Did you drive that one?

    The block exemption rules are relating to new vehicles and manufacturers warrantys.

    Mapfre are a 3rd party and aren't actually offering a warranty but an insurance policy so they can set the goalposts as they wish, and they do.

    It might not say it has to be main dealer, I assumed it is as it was a Peugeot garage saying it's ok to brining it back to them for servicing with the mapfre warranty.

    Yeah, to be fair I was a bit over the top and personally a bullet proof warranty would be very important to me also.

    My point in this case is that car is very likely a very tidy example and if one knew what they wanted and knew what particular issues to look for (there’s plenty of info on here!), then a very decent saving could be made.

    I know M6 Motors have been around a long time too, I know of guys who’ve bought off them, I’ve heard good reports.

    Yep, McCoys alright. They're popular enough with the Cupra. A 181 300 sold after a few days the other week and they sold 2 191 4 drives last week. Wouldn't be surprised if the 161 was gone by the end of the week. Just a shame the minimum value on PCP was so low otherwise I'd have picked it up myself.

    I haven't driven a 4 drive but I've seen plenty of people online saying they prefer front wheel variants (Cupra and GTI) over the likes of an R. Apparently you can feel the extra weight on them.

    I had the 161 ST to myself for a short spin so got to give it a proper boot. The ST 290 felt like it had more torque steer than the 300. Don't know if that's a bad thing but it keeps you on your toes.

    I usually make sure to go when it's busy - 12 o clock on a Sunday etc. They won't have enough salesmen to go with everyone.

    I wasn't even planning on going for a test drive, I phoned just to get some numbers and he phoned me back a few hours later to go for one anyway.

    Im not a fan of it so would prefer HP.

    I drove a Leon Capra before my first Golf R and apart from the much lower rent interior it was a very similar drive. Except for the torque steer.

    In fairness I've a Qashqai as a family car with the baby. Automatic as the other half doesnt have a manual licence.

    I'm the daily driver as I have to drop the little one off to creche, but it bores the tits off me. It's a 181 and Im already considering something more interesting.



    My "normal" car is an Evo (but no iso points in the car for baby seats) so I'd be ok with with the 300+ BHP and 4WD.


    Christ I feel so old even typing that :/

    I've 3 baby seats in the GTi for crèche runs....lads egging me on to hear the turbo this morning, come on daddy do super turbo, faster, faster. There only 3 & 4.

    I recorded my kids reaction to launching the R a few times. First time they had a couple seconds of terror on their face followed by laughing and do it again do it again. By the third time they were bored and didn't even flinch. Then in the E30 it was "do a 'speed turn' daddy!".

    They say nothing now I'm in a diesel again...
