Amazon.com from America delivery and VAT?

    I have ordered an item from Amazon.com which is not available here in Europe, it is actually my first time ever ordering from Amazon.com as I would normally use the Amazon.co.uk site.

    The import fees deposit are coming to $87.44 which is actually greater than 21% - 23% VAT on the base price of $341.79.

    I hope that this will cover the VAT and I won't get a nasty surprise of the postman looking for X amount + €10 handling fee.

    The word deposit has me confused however, deposit indicating I might owe more import duty. Would anyone here who has imported from the US give me a rundown on how it works?

    More often than not I've had all/a portion of that refunded a number of weeks after the delivery. You won't be charged anything on arrival.

    I bought a few items earlier this year from Amazon.com and had no problems.

    They use ‘deposit’ as they will refund you the difference if the actual cost is lower.

    I calculated myself and the deposit amount was accurate for my transactions.

    You won't be charged additional fees if the actual Import Fees exceed the Import Fees Deposit we estimated. For items sold by Amazon Marketplace sellers, please check the seller's policies.
    If the actual Import Fees are less than the Import Fees Deposit collected by us on your behalf, you'll automatically be refunded the difference to the payment method you used for the order. You'll receive a notification e-mail confirming the amount of the refund. The refunds will be processed as and when we receive carrier invoices confirming the actual Import Fees.

    amazon will try and ship it from uk or Germany what was the item i use ebay UK or Amazon uk
    don't forget voltage is different in us
    so watch out for electronics

    This sounds good, based on my calculations I have a 25.58% import fees deposit paid and should be due a $15.65 refund if they just charge me 21% VAT assuming there is no surcharge or VAT collection charges like An Post. The item is due for delivery next Tuesday week so I will soon know.

    It is a specialised piece of electronics, the Amazon.co.uk marketplace seller price is almost €600 so there is a big saving from the US even with the import VAT. It is rechargeable so even if 110v I can just use the USB charger with an Irish charger or else use a transformer.

    What are you expecting in customs charges?

    Yip.

    Cost + 12%of cost plus charges inc insurance etc for customs gives the base price for which vat is calculated.

    Customs take the price paid inc delivery fee & add on excise duty. Then they add the vat as far as I remember. You don't just pay vat

    I had not allowed anything for customs duty, so I don't know where I stand really.

    I only ever had to pay VAT 3 times before all payable to my postman on delivery. Once on a DVD boxset from the channel islands from play.com, once on a specialised piece of electronics from New Zealand and most recently on an android kodi box from China around 5 years ago.

    This item is the most expensive item I have ever ordered from outside the EU.

    There will be a charge in there for Customs clearance/Fee outlay. Amazon are normally on the mark when it comes to the deposit.

    My item arrived yesterday via UPS, there was nothing to be paid (as I had already it paid) and it came no different to any other item. 6 days and straight through customs was a good success.

    A padded large envelope from Lexington, Kentucky. No customs CN22 or anything, the same typical amazon sticker you'd get always.
