Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Ireland won't be there unfortunately, we won't even be hosting games as was initially planned, but the delayed European Championships finally kicks off tonight at 8pm.

    Schedule is as folllows:

    June 11th -

Opening ceremony, followed by Italy VS Turkey KO @ 20:00

    Saturday 12th June:

    Wales VS Switzerland - KO @ 15:00

    Denmark VS Finland - KO @ 18:00

    Belgium VS Russia - KO @ 21:00

Full schedule can be found here: https://www.uefa.com/uefaeuro-2020/fixtures-results/#/md/33673

    Mod Notes:

This thread is for a light hearted outlook on the finals.

That means no turning this thread into a discussion on anything other than the football itself.

Serious discussion on the matches/players/VAR/transfers etc can be had over on the soccer forum.

If you want to discuss topical issues such as players taking the knee, go and join the current discussion in Current Affairs

IMPORTANT: This thread is to discuss the tournament. Abuse towards any players/teams/managers/referees will not be tolerated and dealt with by way of a 1 week forum ban.

The usual After Hours rules apply for everything else.

Here's to a good tournament, hopefully it will be entertaining!

Will England end 55 years of hurt?

    Will you be watching?

    Do you care?

Will a pundit lose it on live tv ala Eamon Dunphy (again)?

The soaps are going to be all over the place for the next month, sorry about that folks :D

Anyone adopting a team for the Euros with Ireland not being there? Must admit I have a soft spot for the Dutch and the Scots.

While I'm ambivalent to England winning it, I do find their games rather entertaining I must say.

At least we’ve involvement with the official song!

It’ll be an Irish anthem when the trophy is lifted…

Soft spot for The Dutch also. Great to see them back at a major tournament. Am partial to Italy as well, mainly because of Chiellini and Bonucci at the back.

I remember thinking that I felt weirdly ambivalent towards England going into the last World Cup. I didn't really dislike them, they seemed like a humble enough bunch with realistic expectations. But, I can remember being in a pub watching their tie against Columbia and when Columbia equalised I lept from my seat and let out a big satisfied roar, just like every single other person in the building, all of which was done automatically and without much conscious thought. So it turns out that no matter what I actually say, even to myself, about how I'm actually not anti England really deep down I know that I am.

Thankfully, there's no cognitive dissonance to negotiate on that front this time. They're back to being arrogant again, so I fully hope they get stuffed.

I wouldn't claim to be an expert, but that really doesn't bode well for our chances.

At least we're spared 'sound Irish fans solve climate crisis' or whatever this time around.

That third Italian goal was similar to Del Piero's finish in the 2006 World Cup Semi Final.

Dunphy should set up a live broadcast with Liam and John before every match and during half time/ at the end. I'd certainly switch it on for a laugh instead of Richie Sadlier and someone from the women's team nobody ever heard of given a spot to tick the boxes you need to tick in 2021.

That isn't a sleight on the validity of their opinion, it's just that punditry used to generally require that the pundit had played the game at a high level.

I like Sadler, you know what the alternatives are I have a bad feeling Liam was only brought in as a ‘Italian specialist’ and they will be back today

Denmark v Finland to look forward to after this. Would that have filled a stadium even in pre-covid times?

In Copenhagen, definitely. Should be a decent game. Eriksen is one of the best players in the international game.

Should be good enough to always score in 90 mins against most teams. Whether their late replacement manager is good enough might be an issue

    Try for Walesl

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,673 ✭✭✭AllGunsBlazing

Decent game after an hour or so of dross.

Bale looks done at this level though, cant go past a man anymore.

He’s not what he was but I think he’s worth his spot and could win or Save a game for them before the tournament is out,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,673 ✭✭✭AllGunsBlazing

Aye, he's certainly capable from a dead ball situation and it's not like Wales are blessed with alternatives.

An later kickoff in lesser temperatures would also help.

Saves his best til last. Did a mean job of firing Tottenham into the Conference League

    Proper European tie this -

in a proper European venue Finland did magnificent to get here but at this particular moment in time I am going to have to say Denmark. Particularly with home advantage and the man at the fulcrum of their midfield Ireland's best player by a long shot; Thomas Delaney.
