Dreadful on so many levels, none moreso than their love affair with all "Cllrs" & politicians.

They must run with every quote sent in to them from these clowns & make a "story" out of them, then again how else are they going to fill 50-odd pages, particularly when they've sat on the fence forever and burrow underground at the slightest whiff of controversy.

Here's a few examples from last weeks paper (which is amazingly very light on McGuinness propaganda).

A local councillor has said Kilkenny is perfectly placed to be a potential location for the headquarters of the new Technological University of the South-East (TUSE).
Cllr Peter ‘Chap’ Cleere, who is the current Kilkenny Carlow ETB chair, says Kilkenny definitely merits consideration for a head office location.

Kilkenny TD Kathleen Funchion has said reports that survivors’ testimonies to the Mother and Baby Homes commission report have been destroyed are ‘very alarming’. Local councillor Peter ‘Chap’ Cleere recently called on Kilkenny County Council to arrange for a permanent plaque to be erected on Thomastown’s main bridge crossing the Nore.

Fine Gael TD, John Paul Phelan, has welcomed investment in two disability service centres in Kilkenny.

Minister of State for Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan and The Green Party have renewed calls for Lá Fhéile Bríde, Brigid’s Day, to be made a public holiday

A North Kilkenny councillor has expressed his frustration at repeated illegal dumping at the bring banks in Urlingford, and fears the facility may be removed if the pattern of offending continues. Such is the extent and frequency of the dumping, the costs to the council are surging. Cllr Michael McCarthy says he is extremely disappointed at the level of dumping taking place at the bring banks.

Luckily for the rest of us the eminent Carthys of The Wetlands seem to manage to fill plenty of column inches (although only fortnightly, on court weeks) and spare us from another "the grant was welcomed by Kilkenny City Councillor David Fitzgerald" type story.

Of course the letters page adds to the overall cringeworthiness and rarely disappoints...

Edited...sorry, can't upload the picture of one of the letters so you're spared that particular hardship!

Is there any regional newspaper that you think does a better job than the People?

An Aunt of mine lives in St Ives for the last fifty years still gets the people sent out to her said she enjoys the local notes and other reading that is on it, her family were going to get it on line for her she said it would not be the same.

New Kilkenny news website coming online this weekend. The work of Jimmy Rhatigan, who's been involved with more media ventures locally than you've had hot dinners. Can't keep a good man down.

No idea yet whether it'll have a special section on dogs who drink pints.

By the by, that photo was from the now no longer trading Killeens in Shannonbridge, Offaly. It was a great pub, and the shop part was the go to place to buy your 3 year's out of date crispy pancakes from. Lovely cheap pint too.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

The Kilkenny People must be under pressure overall. Hard to find circulation figures but the most recent ones I can find are from 2012 when the figures were falling year on year, hard to see how that has changed (https://www.ilevel.ie/print/regional-newspapers-abc-circulation-july-dec-2012/)

The People is owned by Iconic Newspapers who have around two dozen regional titles in Ireland but that's not necessarily a good thing. Iconic have announced a host of redundancies (in the Tipp Star and other titles) last month. They were also slammed by the NUJ last year for their behaviour https://www.nuj.org.uk/resource/irish-government-iconic-newspapers.html

What's important to note is that Iconic is owned by Malcolm Denmark. He made his money from advertising, not from news, he doesn't care about the Callan Notes or Enda McEvoy's sports section or any local interest, all he wants are local businesses paying for ads and keeping the figures on his rate card solid.

There are some excellent journalists and contributors in Kilkenny but I for one sense that their future does not lie with The People.
