Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

local and by elections - what for?

    Can someone break it down for me in layman terms as to what local and by-elections are for? I want to have a basic idea before I go to the polling station this week. Also, I have heard it said that these elections are a chance to 'oust the government'. Is this true? Could poor results for the government in these elections result in a general election being called?

    Local elections are to elect your county council.

    The bye-elections are to elect TDs to replace Nicky McFadden and Patrick Nulty in the Dail.

    The European Elections are to send MEPs to the European parliament.

    None of these can "oust the government".

    If the government parties do badly (and it seems that Labour will do very badly) there will be a lot of chatter about the coalition breaking up, Gilmour getting the boot etc.

    However, the coalition's only real chance at the next general election is to hold things together and pray that the economy improves in the next 2 years, so don't expect any real change.

    This is what I had imagined - so people who say that this is a chance to 'get rid of them from goverment' haven't a clue what they are talking about.

    So, we elect our council? How do you know which politician is canvassing for a vote to the council and which is canvassing for a vote for a seat in Europe?

    You can see who'll win the euro seats at paddypower :D

    Try googling your county council: mine has a list of candidates up.
