Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

A 76 knot gust at Mace Head, must be a small circulation in the flow tightening the gradient.

    ...141 km/h gust...Status Red by Met E's own criteria.

Turning very wild once again in east Galway. Mean speed now on 29 kts. Making a hell of a racket out there!

PS, a fairly big chinmey fire a few doors down firing out sparks out all over the place. Much better than snow :D

What was the max gust before the 76 kts at Mace Head, anyone notice? Radar echoes are moving across the country at about 80 knots or more, anything mixing down to ground level could provide tornadic wind streaks most likely in locations that have generally good exposure for 50-100 miles to their west-northwest to allow cells to develop undisrupted by terrain. Now that it's dark out, would use frequent lightning as a strong indicator of approaching tornadic cells, you obviously won't see or hear them coming at you.

Watch in particular cells in north Mayo, east Tipp and near Kerry-Limerick border. All these are moving east-south-east, one or more could develop tornadic wind streaks. Would consider postponing any long-distance driving especially if it takes you through central counties or near west coast.

High tides on Galway and Mayo coast shown in previous post are timed for about 8 to 9 p.m., seawalls may be over-topped around those times, especially Galway city.

What I would suggest here (or anywhere else) is to say red alert conditions could be encountered in very localized areas where convective cells mix down stronger wind gusts that are ongoing aloft. The chance of any one person in Ireland being in red alert conditions is probably less than one in a hundred thousand at this point but I would be watching radar for indications of locally stronger wind gusts than the general 110-120 km/hr in exposed locations this evening. These might not last very long but could do some moderate damage and blow high-sided vehicles over if they are crosswinds. Take your lorries off the road for a while if you're going north-south. Also, expect some coastal inundations around high tides which for many parts of the west coast would appear to be fairly soon (8-9 p.m.).

How are the winds looking for the next few hours? They have peaked only an hour ago here in west clare.

You can extract hourly data from various synoptic stations from this site M.T.

    http://www.meteociel.fr/observations-meteo/temperatures.php?region=uk

Just click on the station you want and it will show hourly parameters for the day, with an option to go back to other days as well. This one is for Mace Head:

Calmed down a lot here outside Newport, Mayo. The odd strong gust but nothing compared to an hour and a half ago.

That is not the low centre off Belmullet, just some kind of large circular cloud mass, the low centre is north of the Hebrides.

The strongest winds are embedded in a decaying cold front or occlusion that is slowly moving south, but eventually all gradients will begin to slacken tonight. Peak winds should ease gradually in all regions by late evening.

BTW thanks, I knew how to get the data for hourlies, I just wanted a fast check on previous peak gust if anyone had noted it. That 74 at Newport is probably more significant than 76 at Mace Head which is basically out on a rock in Galway Bay.

Picked up massively here in West Dublin the last 30 minutes. Feels stronger than the wind from a few weeks ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,588 ✭✭✭✭M.T. Cranium

Interesting to me, and I've noticed this before, the strongest winds were just in advance of high tides.

Wildest winds I've hear here in South dublin in a long time. The noise is crazy

Very strong winds in North Dublin!

Heavy winds this evening have caused several go-arounds at irish airports.

    Among these are

FR807 STN-NOC Go-around followed by a hold. Landed sucessfully on second attempt

EI3357 NCL-DUB Go around, turned wrong direction after go-around and a Ryanair jet had to change course. Lengthy hold followed and now on second approach.

FR109 STN-SNN Go around, followed by several holds, is now diverting to Dublin.

FR2312 SXF-SNN Go around after FR109, holding now at 8000ft near Roscrea

Very stormy here at around 20:00 but quietening down a bit since, while driving home I drove over some phone lines that were downed!

Be careful any-one driving from finglas to swords on the St Margarets back roads in Dublin, there's a tree down blocking the whole road.

Can confirm. There is thunder and lightening in Limerick. The thunder is just shaking the table! :D

Yeah, 4 strikes a couple of miles north of me in Annacotty. Real house-shakers.

  • Registered Users Posts: 356 ✭✭Strangegravy

They were big rumbles, the windows were rattling with those!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,780 ✭✭✭jamo2oo9

I've never experienced anything like this before! Even in US, there was thunderstorms that didn't have those kind of rumbles. Same thing in France

We getting particularly loud thunder coming 20 to 30 seconds after seeing lightening flashes. Located on the Tipperary side near Limerick City.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,597 ✭✭✭corsav6

Had a very long rumble of thunder 5 mins ago, the only one I noticed all night. Didn't see any lightning and heard nothing since.
Wind is blowing moderate gusts every few mins and the odd shower of hail too.
    Newport, Mayo.

Various power outages around Limerick, the thunder we had an hour ago shook the windows. Never heard anything as deep and rumbling as that. Wind has picked up again here in East Limerick and a few flashes of lightning in the distance.

Just echoing other people - thunder in limerick last night was seriously powerfu! Felt like the house moved, guess it was just the windows.

The Achill coast guard is reporting peak gusts of 137 km/h yesterday. It certainly felt like it from where I was sitting.

I was looking at the xcweather app and saw a wind gust of 85 mph in Newport sometime around 7pm last night, and I thought 50mph or so in our neck of the woods was bad enough.

7pm in Galway last night and I thought the roof was gone, never heard wind like it before, the noise was like a jet engine I thought a Tornado was coming.
