So it looks like Met Éireann is planning to change at least its METAR observations to fully automatic, with the exception of Dublin Airport. On its website is an advert for the position of Project Manager, in which it states
Met Éireann is currently in the preparation phase for a project to modernise and automate its aviation observational infrastructure (Aviation Modernisation and Automation Project - AMAP). The project will modernise its aviation surface observation network, and with the exception of Dublin, automate aviation surface observations. This goal is primarily driven by the requirement to provide safe and effective observations which meet all EU and International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards. It is also motivated by the delivery of cost efficient, up to date services to key users and the State.

Well that's just great! I assume the automation of METARs will mean the hourly SYNOPs will also go automatic, like all other stations in the country.

How can automation "provide safe and effective observations which meet all EU and International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards."? surely it's less of that and more of "the delivery of cost efficient,..." services.

im just wondering about this interesting idea called 'progress'. what happens if we apply this 'progress' idea to other aspects of our lives, and automate a lot of our jobs, what will we work at? just an idea im pondering. thank you

Good question. I think we'll need to re-train in installing and maintaining the equipment that's automating your job.
