Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

How will the 2010s be remembered??

So we're coming the end of the 2010s, how will be remembered? What is its legacy? Some good social movements, but a decade blighted by a very poor economy for large parts too.

I've got a list of political, cultural and social events which I think define this decade along with some other buzzwords. Just a brainstorm:

    - Effects of the 08/09 economic crash (biggest since the great depression)
    - Obama
    - Trump
    - Austerity
    - Afghanistan War
    - Brexit
    - Selfies
    - Fake News
    - The rise of the alt-right
    - Grenfell
    - Migrant crisis
    - ISIS
    - Japanese tsunami
    - #metoo
    - LGBT rights
    - Repeal the 8th
    - 'Woke' politics
    - Irish emgiration
    - Social media
    - Superhero films
    - London 2012/Rio 2016
    - Memes
    - Arab Spring
    - Syrian Civil War
    - Game of Thrones
    - Smartphones
    - Scottish Referendum
    - Tattoos
    - Gangnum style

Anything else? How do you think it overall will be remembered in years to come?

How can you have the Olympics there and not World Cup/Euros?

2014 World Cup was probably one the best in tournaments in its history.

2012 & 2016 Euros for Ireland, for 2 very different reasons.

I live in the north so I'm exposed to the UK media more and London 2012 was a big thing here with the 29 gold medals. Probably not obviously in the south, you're probably right, I probably should've omitted it here.

However I must say 2014 was not one of the best WC's ever IMO. Great group stage, crap knockout stage. The final stank too. 2018 final was much better.

Apparently they had the 20s in the 19th century too. Napoleon died, the 'typowriter' was invented, Beethoven composed his 9th Symphony (The Choral), and Daniel O'Connell was elected to parliament for the first time.

    Nobody liked jazz.

The decline of Internet message boards
The prevalence of social media (responsible for the former)
The smartphone (and people glued to them)
Beards being hugely in fashion for men, especially young men
    Skinny jeans for men
    Mainstreaming of the hipster culture
    Utterly crap music
The cult of the non entity “celebrity”
    Nostalgia for the 1990s
    Brexit
    Trump
Virtue signaling, the SWJs and the Alt Right
The printed newspaper beginning to enter its death throes

Maybe. Although I was online the other day and noticed there were something like 1,500 registered users online, and about 3,000 in total. Can't check current stats as I'm on my phone.

    That's still pretty decent.

But that's not the main reason I'm posting here. I had a dream last night that I was down home in the countryside and Donald Trump was hiding in an outhouse on our farm (the Border Fox did this in the 1980s). For some reason I was trying to help him, bringing him boiled eggs from the breakfast table. But he kept moving from shed to shed, and there was a hen following me trying to snatch the eggs. I kept trying to frighten her off by pretending to grab her, but she wasn't intimidated.

The hen must be a metaphor for the American public trying to reclaim their democracy (eggs), and I am the unwitting accomplice (the fools who vote for Donald) in the hope he might bring them some personal fortune.

Maybe that's how we'll remember the 2010s. I have found myself to be terribly psychic in the past.

Nobody mentioned Tinder? Definitely a "social event". In generations to come, think of all the couples telling their grandchildren how they met on Tinder.

Probably as 'the good old days'. Not (necessarily) because the 2020s will be objectively worse, but because we'll all be that little bit closer to decrepitude and death and will view the past through rose-tinted glasses.

    Happy Sunday, everyone.

    Mass tourism

Migration to city centres, and the reversal of suburban sprawl

    Celebrity and social influencer worship

    Obsession with physical appearance

    Complete abandonment of religion

Fad diet , supplements, super foods, trying everything and anything to be healthy (without the efforrt of doing the actual healthy things like just regular exercise and eating normal healthy foods)

Globalisation and the erasure of characteristics which used to differentiate cultures/countries/ethnic groups

Ignorance and disregard for the welfare of a dying planet that we are knowingly killing because of greed and convenience, other generations did that but we are the first to continue do so while being so accutely aware of the consequences of our actions

For disruptive internet TV IE: Netfliks, Amazon, Hulu etc.

but also for some great TV.

    For climate change,

    For fake news unfortunatly,

For the rise of online shopping and the fall of bricks and mortar retailers unfortunately.

For the rise of the SUV and the decline of the saloon unfortunately,

For the rise of diesel cars unfortunately, but hopefully the next decade will fix that.

For some great movies in the cinema's :)

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.
