Prospects for returning mechanical design engineers?

I'm just after returning to Ireland last week after living and working in the UK for the last four years.

There I worked for Alstom as a mechanical design engineer for rail vehicles, and later for JCB's Backhoe Loader new product team. In these roles I used Catia V5 and Siemens NX respectively, with all CAD data being managed with PLM applications.

So my experience to date is with heavy machinery, mostly designing steel components. I'm just trying to gauge what the market is like at the moment in terms of machinery/product design in the Dublin/Leinster region, as I've never had an insiders view of the sector in Ireland. Although I see that there are loads of roles for mechanical engineers in the construction sector, I'm trying to avoid going into that sector as my concern is that it will eventually contract severely once the next domestic recession arrives.

Is there much activity going on and does anyone know of any firms looking for staff?

Not the same here, in britain you have all the big yellow goods - JCB, Caterpillar and dozens of subcontractors. Perhaps here similar might be mchale, combilift, suretank.. .. I guess nearer dublin it might be more product design - how about the medical companies doing devices. Pharma itself perhaps?

Intel, while the construction has some mechanical, the new fab will have 000s of roles in production engineering type jobs, very stable long term, but maybe you might have to broaden your skillset.

Note that this is building services engineering (designing plumbing and ventilation) and not the motor engineering / manufacturing engineering that most mechanical engineers work in.

What about the medical devices, aviation maintenance, pharmaceutical design or power sectors?
