would anyone agree that dundalk is a dangerous town?

With the college and the football there can be drunken fights, abuse from kids and generally it doesn't pay to wander around at night.

    What do you think?

I think any town/city can be dangerous and trouble for anyone that wants it.But to start a thread stating dundalk is a dangerous town im insulted and will be reporting your post. You sterotyped all people living in dundalk.

Why would i be , im proud of the town i live in and was born in , its heritage , football team , and the people that live there. Their is scum bags everywhere no need to start thread about everywhere is there ?

Oh the humanity of it all...

There are scumbags everywhere, but this is the North East section of the boards, and its the right place to talk about a problem Dundalk may/may not have.

I have changed the title of this thread as I think it can be perceived as a generalisation about Dundalk and I will be keeping an eye out for anything similar in this thread. So you have been warned.

On Dundalk itself... I have been at college in DKIT for a couple of years (lived there for one of them) and I have had no problems with the place. Sure you'll get abuse from kids but that is exactly what they are... Kids! If you are insulted by them then you should grow up in my opinion.

I have never been involved in any sort of fight and I have walked from the town back to Glenwood at night so many times I couldn't possibly give you a figure without guessing. Maybe people have different experiences but that is mine...

I'm living in Dundalk since last December (nearly a year, hey!) and never had any problems with the local scumbags. They generally tend to keep themselves to themselves and kick the sh!t out of each other and not ordinary decent folk.

Mind you I don't go to night-clubs much... but like Pornapster above I've walked through town plenty of times at night without any hassle. Many Irish towns and cities are much more dangerous... Dublin, for one small example.

iv lived there all my life n i never really found it to b particularly dangerous. i recently moved abroad for coll,n heard bout a number of incidents, eg benny leggett in the hit n run. but i don think u can really steroetype this as dundalk bein a dangerous town more so than any other, can u?cos this cud happen in any town

Ive been living (on and off) in Dundalk for most of my life and the Town centre is in no way anyworse than any other place Ive ever lived. Where you have groups of people worse the wear with drink you're bound to have a bit of bother. Its time this generation shook off the image of Dundalk as El Paso and started talking positively about your own town. The amount of people Ive heard from Dundalk write it off is a disgrace. Go and live in a few different places and get some perspective.

    UP DA TOWN :D;)

Every town is a dangerous town, in fairness.

Edit: and by that I mean that's it's slightly ridiculous to single Dundalk out as a "dangerous town". How "dangerous" a place is depends entirely on how "dangerous" you make it. Admittedly I've had my fair share of trouble in Dundalk, but I just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, it could have happened anywhere. Dundalk is no more dangerous than anywhere else in Ireland.

I went to DKIt (RTC in my day) and used to stay in Dundalk on a regular basis. Now to be fair this is a good ten years ago. At that stage and from what I gather still the square had/has a reputation for being a dangerous spot...... on a weekend..... in the early hours of the morning.......when the pubs are all closing..... and the drunks are queuing for taxis (anybody see where this is going).... or eating chips and all at the same time in the same spot.

It's no different to West Street in Drogheda, O'Connell St, Wexford St etc in Dublin, etc etc etc any major town centre. Singling out Dundalk is unfair even if it is the only place I've had a knife put to my throat.

I've been living here about three years at this stage and I've never had any trouble besides little kids shouting names and stuff like that but then I stay away from what could be trouble areas. I've walked home drunk many many nights and the only people that have approached me are people looking for drugs

Also, I'm interested to know how the "abuse from kids" can be dangerous.

    jaysus.

    well for a start, relax.
i've been beaten up there by a group of about eight 16 year olds and my girlfriend was robbed recently, so y'know, i was wondering if this was a normal thing.
its an opinion board, y'know, i was asking an opinion.

    i won't ask again.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,702 ✭✭✭bounty_hunter

I've also been beaten up several times, but I stand by what I said. It could have happened absolutely anywhere.

I lived in Dundalk for 23 years and still go back most weekends for the past 2 years... Like any large town, it has its fair share of problems and sumbags, however it is unreasonable to suggest it is unsafe or even dangerous.

In my experience, the only trouble I have ever had in the town involved a bunch of Northern boys from South Armagh, 6 of them accussed me of elbowing their mate in the face and eventually started a fight with me .. In my experience, alot of trouble is caused by people from outside the town who come into the town on the odd occassion for a proper night on the town..

I live in laceys on a sunday night and have never been in one fight in teh last 3 years ! now saying that trouble is there if you want it , but isnt it everywhere

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,987 ✭✭✭✭zAbbo

Haven't noticed it myself, especially if you'r living the college/dublin road side of the town.

There's scumbags in every town, generally if you're looking for trouble you'll get it, IE hanging around after nite clubs are over.

You'll never have any trouble walking home from niteclubs in the Dublin road direction, all the action is from vicars to the square after the niteclubs over and ppl are well oiled and looking for a foight cause they didnt get the grope of some young wan :)

Just reread your mans post "with the college and football" sure thats where the trouble is?

I like Dundalk and I've walked wrong drunk it in many times after nightclubs close to chippers. I've never had any trouble.

If you go looking for trouble anywhere you'll find it.

S'funneh... I was Assistant Manager there for about 6 weeks and saw plenty of fights in that time which ended with the Gardaí and Ambulance services being called.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,344 ✭✭✭ErinGoBrath

I'm orginally from Dundalk and have only moved to Dublin 3 years ago.

I've never had any trouble in Dundalk and have no problems walking around the town when I'm locked at the weekends.

As Sarge said if your not looking for trouble you won't get in any. Nuff said

I was brought up in Dundalk, I haven't lived there for more than ten years, but I visit fairly regularly. The town has a reputation for being "rough", but tbh it's not much worse than most others in this country.
I'm about puzzled though by the comment about the football though, I've been to plenty of matches (not recently though -- I've got tired of watching them lose), and know people involved in the club and in my opinion, the Dundalk supporters are usually fairly well-behaved and friendly. Linfield matches aside (and the trouble at those had nothing to do with the football), there's usually not much trouble around the matches.
I agree with the previous poster that Dundalk people have to shake the El Paso image. Dundalk people tend to be kind of schizophrenic, complaining about how **** the town is, but also ready to jump down the throat of any outsider who disses "de town". IMHO, the place has improved drastically over the last 10-15 years .

I've been to Dundalk a few times and I've never seen any kind of trouble. Ya, your usual muppets acting the fool alright but that's about it. sure, don't you get them everywhere. I like Dundalk, and I'd go back again. Well I knda have to, because my brother lives up there....

My girlfriend was also mugged but the poor fecker didnt get away with as she hammered him in the Long Walk Shooping Centre and the Security Gaurds had to pull her off him. He was indeed a teenage.

Happened again months later and the teenager who tryed didnt get anything of her and a group of lads ran after the little fecker as well.

You have this everywhere especially in the bigger towns - you have to be street smart and be careful of people around you.

Walking around in Dundalk - I do but i wouldnt walk through Muirhavenmor Coxs or Fathma. Wouldnt probably be fit to walk that distance anyway id get a taxi. Dundalk has a good CCTV system - hopefully it works proper.

Can i just say god bless that young man who was tragicly killed not so long ago as he tryed to stop a fight or something on Park St.

Dundalk is not that bad compared to the likes of Dublin twined with Baghdad and Newry twined with Beriut.

I have lived here for 20 years and found incidents from time to time happened but I feel safe in my town and a lot of weekend incidents are caused by A) Knackers (people from the town will know who I am talking about) and B) Drunken Northern Morons who have an over inflated ego and are generally full of sh1t.

I myself have never been in a fight but have seen them and a lot are caused by the above and yes also STUDENTS from DKIT, we are no angels but in my opinion it is one of the better towns and I have lived in a fair few.

    Eamonn Mulvenna RIP
Dundalk FC would like to extend its deepest sympathy to the family of former Dundalk player Eamonn Mulvenna who tragically died on Friday night.

TRAGIC DEATH OF YOUNG DUNDALK MAN
A man has died in Dundalk after falling off a balcony in Whispers Lap Dancing club in the centre of the town. The accident happened shortly after 2.30am this morning.First reports suggest the man went outside for a smoke and fell from the 3 storey high emergency stairway. It is believed he was refused entry to the Imperial Hotel which resulted in him going elsewhere. The 20-year-old was taken to Louth County Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.Gardaí are not treating the death as suspicious.
