Visitor Permits - for travelling to Northern Ireland or Britain to compete

Anyone wishing to bring their Firearms to either Northern Ireland ( or Britain ) for competitions (or hunting) requires a visitor permit from the relevant police force to do so.

NASRPC will be holding our annual Irish Open in Bracken, Strabane, Co. Tyrone this year.

This is the first time the Open will have been held in Northern Ireland and will be a great event.

So..... You need a visitor permit from the PSNI...... how do you go about it?

It is quite simple actually and very efficient.

NASRPC will collect application information and - once a month, starting at the end of January - we will push this through your sponsor in Bracken to the PSNI.

This will allow us to avail of bulk discounts.

NASRPC will pay the application fee (16 GBP) on your behalf and collect it from you at Registration for the Irish Open or intervening event.

So send us the following information - to competitions@nasrpc.ie
    • Name
    • Home Address
    • Phone number (incl. Intl code)
    • Scan of both sides of all licenses you wish to have on your visitor permit (ensuring that none of the expire before end August)
    • Scan of all pages of your European Firearms Pass
We will store this data securely, only until you inform us that your Visitor Permit has arrived, at which point we will destroy the data.

Your PSNI visitor permit will be valid for one calendar year, or until any of the Irish licenses on it expire, whichever is first.

This will mean you can also attend other competitions in Northern Ireland such as the match to be held on the Ballykinler ranges in Co. Down in August.

If you do not have a European Firearms Pass yet - simply drop into your local Garda station with passport photos and your licenses - tell them you want a European Firearms Pass - and that's it - they will take some details, have you sign some stuff, provide the photos and you are done.

It will have to be signed by senior Gardai - so will come out to you in a few days.

We highly recommend that everyone tries to have their visitor permits in hand before Brexit in March - after which, we can expect delays - so please do not delay in getting us the information.

If you have any questions or issues .... please feel free to contact us.

Do you expect any complications or longer delays with Brexit?

Shooters should be aware that there has been a change by the UK Police forces in relation to issuing a visitors permit.
In times past they issued a permit that was valid for a 12 month period (providing your Europass was valid for that 12 months), however they have now changed to where they will issue the permits on a visit by visit basis i.e. for individual competitions or visits for game shooting. Given that the time that permits have taken in the past it is going to make it difficult (and costly) for shooters going on a regular basis. There can still be a 12 month permit issued in a case where a shooter can show that they intend to shoot in the UK on a regular basis. It will require a letter from the applicant stating their reasons for the 12 month permit. The final decision will rest with the Police force that the application is made to.

One would have to assume that after the start of March there would be delays in processing of anything by the Police or Civil Service in Northern Ireland or Britain. Especially in terms of matters that involve multiple jurisdictions.

There will be some changes which will have to be adopted - transitions that will have to occur.

The Home office have already issued advise for those in the UK seeking visitor permits in the EU - and for those that will be seeking visitor permits for use in the UK.

Hence why we suggest that people try to submit their applications in January or February to minimise any delays in processing.

We do no foresee any issues in that regard.

Visitor permit applications for the Phoenix Match is Bisley are already being processed by Surrey Police with the aid of the NRA Uk.

Visitor Permits for the the Irish Open will start to be processed by the PSNI, with the Aid of Bracken Gun Club and the Ulster Rifle Association at the start of February.

If any issues arise, we will deal with them - and keep people apprised of any changes notified to us by either Surrey Police or the PNSI.

Have to agree, get your applications in early, I had no problems getting my NI pass from 01 jan to 31 dec for this year, and Im hoping I wont see any problems in the future, that PSNI service isn't broke so I don't see why they would change it. but like BREXIT God only knows.
