Holiday visa for 3 week holiday?

Hi there sorry if its been raised before, myself and the girlfriend are heading to NZ for 3 weeks, do we still need to have a holiday visa? I think i saw somewhere that you dont need it if you are there for less than 3 months which if thats the case all you need to show is your flight out? Thanks
