is that a full quotation from an online source or letter? If so, could you give the link (the ones you provided seem to be in French only?). It's also against copyright to post the full text, so I'm going to have to edit it.

I don't think they were ex racers. They were on their way to Spain as racing greyhounds. Shows how lax border controls are when an overcrowded van could load undetected. Sad end to beautiful animals.

statement from IGB, Bord na gCon is fully committed in supporting the National and International Authorities investigate the potential breaches of EU Animal Welfare and Transport Regulations which led to the tragic deaths of 11 Greyhounds in Cherbourg, France.
    Wednesday 29th October 2014

Bord na gCon are deeply shocked and horrified by recent news of the discovery of greyhound bodies in a greyhound transporter in Cherbourg, France. We understand from initial investigations that Gendarmes Maritimes and Port Surveillance Platoon at Cherbourg discovered 11 greyhounds which had tragically died due to suffocation in transit.

In accordance with Council Regulation (EC) No 1/2005- No animal of any species must be transported unless it is fit for the intended journey and all animals must be transported in conditions guaranteed not to cause them injury or unnecessary suffering. In addition the transporter must ensure that all necessary arrangements are made in advance to minimise the length of the journey and meet all of the animals’ needs during the journey.

In conjunction with its own investigative procedures, Bord na gCon will also be providing every possible assistance to the French Maritime Authorities, the Department of Agriculture and any other relevant national authorities, to determine whether there has been a breach of the EU Animal Welfare Regulations and also to ascertain why a routine operation involving the commercial transportation of greyhounds resulted in such suffering and unexpected mortality. Bord na gCon in collaboration with the relevant authorities will endeavour to ensure that all necessary measures are taken to prosecute those responsible

At present Bord na gCon is providing a EU Travel and Pet Passport Service in recognition of European Union regulations (Council Directive 92/65/EEC Balai Directive) for pet travel and identification requirements for the commercial movement of dogs. This successful initiative reaffirms our commitment to the Greyhound Industry and ensuring that utmost Animal Health and Welfare responsibilities are met when transporting animals abroad. We are deeply regretful that such a tragedy has taken place at a time when such positive welfare developments within the industry are taking place.

There's fek all greyhound racing in Spain.

These Irish greyhounds would have been destined for hare coursing, used as hunting dogs & for breeding purposes. Destined for a long & happy life in the sun they were most definitely not.

Spanish galgueros are notorious for their mistreatment of their dogs. The majority of greyhounds end up "living" in unsanitary conditions, neglected and mistreated. When they no longer serve a useful purpose they are cruelly slaughtered (usually by hanging or drowning in a well, once their microchips have been cut out) or simply abandoned. There are hundreds of abandoned greyhounds wandering the streets of Spain. They get hit by vehicles, they starve, they are easy targets for further abuse. The "lucky" ones fall into the hands of the dog rescue organisations who struggle financially and emotionally to rehabilitate them and return them to some semblance of health so that, hopefully, they can be rehomed. Dog rescue organisations in Spain are full to overflowing with greyhounds.

Surely the Irish greyhound racing fraternity is aware of the fate of greyhounds in Spain? If not, they should be. Why, in 2014, are Irish greyhounds still being sold to Spain? Whoever sold these greyhounds and all those involved in the sale/passport/transportation chain should hang their heads in shame.

I have no doubt that those facilitating the sale of greyhounds to Spain are in single figures. Having said that, it's still too many.
The big issue here is not greyhound racing, it's the illegal trafficing of animals across borders, with little or no controls.

they do lure racing i think it is in portugal , dogs have gone over for decent money and transported over in good conditions in the past

this is a case of dogs being transported against the set regulations

It looks as if all the dogs paperwork was in order. The transporter seems to have not declared them and the ensuing neglect caused their deaths.
