Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. thanks for your reply .

I set it up exactly as the original post, up to point 11 except for disabling the upc wifi ....
    nothing more .

in case this is relevant I should tell you I didn't bother turning it off as the wifi speed I was getting from the tp link where SO good.

The issue I have now is the other member's of the family iphone ,Samsung phone and tablets some days are connected to the wifi, which says its signal strength is excellent BUT cant access the internet.

As an example , my wife had internet on her Samsung s4 mini then went to collect the kids and when she re-entered the house connected to the wif but she couldn't access the internet .

My phone is having no such problems .

Any ideas what iam doing wrong ?

this should have said SO not no .

Ah, that's where I'm going to leave you, it's impossible to diagnose an issue when you have double NAT

ok , fair enough thanks anyway .

    just googled double nat .

looked like double dutch too me .

is it not strange it doesn't happen to my phone but does to the others !!

Folks, I was browsing komplett.ie yesterday and their pricing on many TP link archer series routers are now seriously competitive versus amazon.
The c7 for example is €109 delivered vs £86(@€;120) plus delivery on Amazon.co.uk.
Similar value to be had with the c2 and c5 aswell.
The poor euro exchange rate is hammering value on Amazon at moment but those Komplett prices seem really competitive at the moment.

Hi question for ye. I was told I couldn't get 200mb broadband because my NIC card in my laptop is a Realtek PCIe FE Family. It's a brand new laptop only 2 months old.

Is this true? if so can I fix this?

    Thanks in advance

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,739 ✭✭✭tnegun

If it is a Realtek PCIe FE Family card the FE is for Fast Ethernet so 100Mbps is the max speed it will operate at. You can still get the service just not avail of full speed on this laptop.

Modern laptop without GigE? You really must have gone cheapo...

That'll give you 80-85Mbps max. A USB adapter could fix it, but it it'd be "messy".

How do you actually tell what speeds your laptop is capable of? Is it somewhere in settings?

Oh lads, look what just dropped into my inbox. I thought the 66U was pretty, this, this is magical (where as DLINKs yoke is fugly).

Its a shame I dont actually use WLAN that much, no reason to buy it.

After playing around with an inherited TP-Link C20i and discovering its WAN/LAN shortcomings, I decided to upgrade to a gigabit capable dual-band router.
    I picked up a TP-Link C2 from Komplett for €54 delivered.
Put my UPC router into bridge mode, hooked up the C2 and all I can say is.....
I should have done it years ago!
My wired network is no longer crippled with the Ubee 10/100 bug and the Wifi performance is transformed.
Averaging @120mb down and 24mb up on 5Ghz and @6-65mb down and 24mb up on 2.4Ghz, with a huge improvement in coverage and quality.

Are you on the 120mb or the 240mb package? Would this router give me the full 240 over 5GHz? I'm looking for a cheap Wireless router that can give the full 240mb over wifi and do 2.4GHz and 5GHz simultaneously, thanks.

I'm on the 240, and yes this router can do up to 433mb on 5ghz wifi(but wifi card in the laptop peaks at 300-wifi N)
That's a theoretical limit, and usually you can expect to get a maximum of 50-60% throughput, with the receiving hardware and the number of devices connecting to the router being a limiting factor.
I am running it in dual mode with 4 wired clients and @14 wireless and find it more than adequate.

When you say upc router is in bridge mode, is it just wireless off, dhcp off and firewall off so it acts as a modem or have you done something else. Wondering if I can do the same.

Just ordered an Archer C8 thanks to this post
    Some great info here
One thing I couldn't see is (and i've looked), when you disable the WiFi on the horizon box, does the WiFi stay disabled?
Meaning, when it goes into standby or it's power cycled.

    Thanks

Thanks, just ordered one from Komplett ..... my Linksys E1000 V2 has been causing intermittent problems with streaming and causing me to have to go to it and turn it off and back on again.

Hopefully this will behave somewhat better.

Great guide BK! Thanks to this guide I ordered an Archer C8 router myself on Saturday, due tomorrow. (Amazon.co.uk)
Have 247mb down on ethernet with UPC but only 40-55mb on wifi (100mb using 5ghz, but some devices in the house need 2.4ghz and the router is not simultaneous dual band).

Quick question about step 6 in your original post.

My current setup with the UPC thomson router assigns IP addresses in the single digits between 2-15 approx, 192.168.1.7 etc . Consequently I have ports forwarded/opened for these specific addresses so I can just set the relevant open port in uTorrent depending on what IP any device has been assigned. Do I need to now open ports for 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.115 etc on the UPC router to match the port assignemtn on the Archer you recommend in step 6?
The UPC router is still the one where the ports will be forwarded/opened right, not the new one?

    Thanks

No, when you bridge your NAT is done on the Archer, not UPCs modem. Youll have to copy your PF entries from the UPC unit.

ED, if he's following the guide on the first post it will be double NAT

The IPs being assigned on the C8 are in the range 192.168.1.100 thru 199, but in the range 192.168.0.10 thru 20 range on the UPC. So consequently the PF setup on the upc is only for IPs 192.168.0.10 thru 20
If I open ports on the C8 in the range 192.168.1.100 thru 199, would I still be double natted?

    Any help appreciated. cheers

Yes, It's double NAT unless you bridge it. Port forwarding twice is never a good idea, it rarely works and is impossible to troubleshoot. You need to either bridge the modem or else setup the C8 as an access point so it's not doing any routing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,287 ✭✭✭100gSoma

ah ok. fair enough. thanks. I'll have a read up about it. Out of my depth there.
I wasn't going to port forward twice, just once on the new router, and remove it from the UPC one.
I'll check and see if I'm better off torrenting with open ports on the original setup (upc router) or with the new faster router but with no open ports.

    Update:
On my experience upgrading my Thomson UPC router to the Archer C8 on the 240mb UPC package.

One suggestion I have might be to check/update the firmware after you first plug in your router. The latest Archer C8 v1 firmware is from March 2015, but mine came shipped with September 2014 firmware. I just downloaded the appropriate firmware file for my router from http://uk.tp-link.com/
There were several bug fixes in the changelog. It resets the router to default settings when you update the firmware so best to do it before you start your setup.

I followed the steps in the first post and had no issues. I setup new SSID names and passwords for both bands 2.4ghz and 5ghz. My Nexus device could not see my 5Ghz. I chnaged the country.region to Ireland (from USA default) and it was fine. I think hte 5ghz use different channels in the USA.

The card in my laptop is an N rated card up to 300mb max. So I get about 130-150mb wireless 5ghz which I'm ok with. (I get 248mb consistently when using ethernet). I never got more than 45-50mb with the old UPC router on 2.4ghz. No doubt my next laptop will have an 'ac' network adapter so will be able to take advantage of the router to an even greater degree. My phone (Nexus 5) now also gets 125mb down on 5ghz and it previously got 45mb. I use the uTorrent android app so this is very helpful too.
I can also have the 2.4ghz band available simultaneously for a couple of older devices which I could not do with the Thomson.

On uTorrent on my PC, I could not get the "Network OK" symbol until I went into the C8 settings and opened a port under the Forwarding/Virtual servers setting. I opened one port for the IP associated with my laptop 192.168.1.100. I know this is a dynamic IP but only my phone and laptop are on 5ghz so I don't see it changing often.
Once the port was opened the "Network OK" icon appeared in uTorrent and torrent download speed increased well up into double figures (used to be 3-4mb max).
I'll watch for any (double nat) issues associated with opening a port on the C8 and revert if there are.

Overall, a really good upgrade experience thanks to the guidance in the first post. Thanks BK.

    Hi all

Back to basics here but I just installed UPC's 120 mb Horizon box and am getting wildly inconsistent speeds over wifi. I stream radio through my laptop and even that drops out every few minutes. I have a Netgear N router (WNR2000) from my previous setup. Is there any point connecting this to the Horizon box to boost wifi (or is it even possible / compatible?). Don't really want to spend €100+ on a new router if possible...

    Thanks

Great write up.. I have just purchased the C9 and I have Broadband only, assuming I have the Cisco EPC3925 supplied Router.

If I follow this guide and Bridge the Router where do I get the connection (Internet) into my Switch, the Cisco EPC3925 or the C9?
Am I right in assuming the C9 will be doing the DHCP?

Also once the Router (Cisco EPC3925) is in Bridge Mode and I have my second C9 attached, will I be able to plug the phone into the phone connection on the Cisco Router?

    Thanks for the help!

Looking for some more help on this subject. Following advice on this forum to get the most out of my 240 mb UPC package I bought a C8 router and hooked it up to the UPC modem. I disabled the wifi in the UPC modem via the web interface. At first everything worked great, I was getting 220 Mbps on my laptop wirelessly with the new router, I was very happy ! But then after a short time we noticed that the wireless was dropping off. So it will work for 15-20 mins at high speed and then stop altogether , after 5-10 mins it will come back. I've tested a laptop wired and I still have connectivity via a cable when the wireless drops off, so it seems that the signal into the house and out of the UPC modem is fine. I've switched the Ethernet ports I was using to connect to the C8 and that makes no difference. It's almost as if there's a fault in the C8 but it's brand new out of the box so this seems unlikely. Before I hooked up the c8 the wireless was working ok, it was variable and would go very slow and even drop off altogether at times ( which is one of the reasons I bought the c8. ) but not as frequently as is is doing now. Any advice most welcome. Thanks

Is it only happening on the laptop or are other devices affected also?

You could try connecting another device wirelessly when the laptop connection fails .... if it connects OK then I would be looking to the laptop for the problem.

    Google...

    http://lmgtfy.com/?q=UPC+DNS

    From the first result:
Select “Use the following DNS server addresses:” and type the following Preferred DNS server address: 89.101.160.8 or alternatively 89.101.160.9 Press OK to save the new settings. Your DNS has now been changed and the Chorus ntl service page will no longer be shown to you.

I got the C8 yesterday and I am experiencing the exact same. Initially it worked like a dream but I am now seeing the issue where over wifi the internet just dies (despite looking like getting full strength) on all devices, that is Macbook, iphone and ipads.

I set it up to the point of the static address. I didn't have time last night to do bridging, and never updated the firmware, so could be the likely candidates. I'll be trying that later and will let you know if it improves.

    **EDIT**
Updating the Firmware did not fix the issue and I continued to see frequent disconnects.
However, after bridging my Technicolor TC2700 everything seems to be holding firm. Connecting is solid and fast.
Hopefully it stays that way, but it does seem that bridging was needed, for me anyway.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but can anyone tell me how to use the Homegroup on Windows 7? I got the second router, Archer 1750 for wireless. My PC is hard wired to the original UPC router but I cant see the PC on the Homegroup anymore on laptops. I've tried a few things, I have the DHCP disabled on the Archer but its still not working for me. If anyone has any ideas about this and would like to share, it would be greatly appreciated.

You need to remove double NAT so you have only one subnet. Disable DHCP and connect it using a Lan port, not Wan

I only had a chance to try this now so thanks for the reply. I did disable DHCP already but didn't do anything else. Now my wifi is not working at all, and I cant access the router. It was 192.168.1.1 but this isn't working now. The internet is working on the PC so its not a problem with the ISP. I was thinking of just switching back to the UPC router for now, but I cant get into the settings on that either to switch on the wifi. Sorry to be putting this here but I'm stuck. No wifi here is a big problem! If anyone knows what to do their advice would be very welcome!

You'll need to get a new DHCP lease from the UPC modem, easier to just reboot the PC

Just signed up for the 240 service. Just a question. The rep said I would be getting a new "box".
(His english was not great so he didnt seem to understand my tech questions)
Does my Technicolor 7200 work with 240MB or do they give you a new modem ("box") or is that the Horizon box he is refering to?.
I have the 7200 bridged and fed to a WNDR3800 N600. This setup works very solid. I have a lot of ports forwarded for Blueiris security cameras and Flight radar 24 feeds and would like to keep that setup if possible. I do not want a modem I cannot bridge.
Just wising myself up for when the tech boys arrive. Maybe I can ask for the right modem when they are here or opt to keep the 7200.

Good, so maybe I can keep my present setup. The 7200 is crap but works fine bridged as a modem only.
Yeah. I have the TV for a few years now but only turn on the thing rarely. Downgraded to the €75 a month bundle from €81. Less HD channels.
    Must look into alternative TV.

    Hi guys,

I'm a new UPC customer to signup for 240Mb fibre in early August. I work at Carphone Warehouse so I could pick up one of the ready to go modems, the only ones we have here are the TC7200U models. Could anyone tell me if this is the latest model that UPC is sending out at the moment? Will it support full 240Mb/s? If theres a newer model, could you tell me if theres any noticeable difference in specs? Also is C8 still the most recommended for an 802.11ac router?

    Thanks

One you're out of contract threaten to cancel, you should get it down to €27.50 a month for 6/9 months. Grab yourself Sky and play them off each other, you should get basic Sky for about €20 a month. If you don't mind running a few cables you can run a few TVs off the one box. (Then use the app to change channels etc.)

Sorry this is probably a bit OT.

Free to Air TV from Satellite, plus a Saorview set up will provide much more that you seem to require from a TV service ..... and no monthly payments just cost of set up!

If you have have one device stuck on 802.11g on your network it will slow everything else down to those kinda speeds. Turn all wifi devices and add them back one by one to see which is the problem. It may also be interference form other networks, in which case you can change the wifi channel on the route or put it to auto where it find the least congested channel. I turned off the Wii ( 802.11g) and one of the mobiles which while 802.11n for some reaons slows the whole network down. If you have a dualzone wifi router you can have old devices on one zone and faster ones on the other.
