Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    From here
With the popularity of the Passivhaus standard and the arrival in December of the more onerous Part L 2011 regulations, Ultra low energy building has finally gone mainstream. Building solutions which focus on a 'fabric first approach' result in minimised energy demand, but; we ask this month, does it result in a simpler and cheaper heating and hot water system. The answer seems to be No. This open group discussion, will explore the varios options for heating a low energy, A1 or Passivhaus build or renovation will be hosted by expert mechanical engineers, plumbers and passivhaus architects, who will each promote the merits of a particular heating solution. We will use the case study of a detached new build built to 'Near Passive' (SSHD18kWh/m2.a, HL 12kW/m2) with a boiler sized as 8kW for space heat and hot water for the coldest day of January 2011 and discuss the following solutions.
60 to 80 tube Vacuum tube solar, 1000L Thermal store, 15kW condensing gas/LPG boiler, underfloor downstairs towel rails upstairs distribution. optional solid fuel stove with back boiler, power showers. MHRV
10kW Air to water Inverter airpump, 350l cylinder, 400l buffer tank, underfloor distribution. MHRV
Compact air scource Heat pump with in-line duct heater batteries and supplimentary bag fed pellet stove.
Interseasonal Storage, utilising stored summer solar storage in water, masonery or PCM stores.
Passivhaus with Solar panels, electric immersion and plug in electric heater.
The discussion is open to the public

    See you there :)

The May meeting of the monthly Green Building Users' Group is organised by NICER Training, Éasca and the Irish Green Building Council.

Tuesday 15 May | 18.00pm – 19.30pm | Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government, Custom House, Dublin 1 | Free
(This is been held in the Conference room on the 1st floor in the Custom House, accessed from the main entrance on the Gardiner St side.)

Numbers are limited so please RSVP to this email if you wish to attend.

This month's presenter is Martin Vaughan, Assistant Principal, Architecture/Building Standards, Dept. of the Environment, Community and Local Government. Martin will discuss the draft Building Control (Amendment) Regulations 2012. This will be followed by Q&A.

The events at Priory Hall Apartments and the publicity surrounding this late last year increased the urgency for the strengthening of the Building Control System. There was considerable discussion on the Building Control system at the Better Building Conference on 25th April. It was agreed that there was need for greater clarification on the proposed system prior to the closing date for public submissions and this event gives an opportunity for building professionals to look at the proposals and put their questions.

In April the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Mr. Phil Hogan, T.D. published the draft Building Control (Amendment) Regulations 2012 for public consultation. This proposes a strengthening of the system including the requirement to lodge drawings prior to commencement. The following documents were published for public consultation.

Draft Building Control (Amendment) Regulations 2012 (pdf, 163kb)
Strengthening the Building Control System - A Document to inform public consultation on Draft Building Control (Amendment) Regulations 2012 (pdf, 214kb)

Consultation on the proposed changes closes on 24th May 2012 at 5:30pm .

Upcoming GBUG meetings are on the following dates: 12 June 12, 17 July 12
