Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Chassis Number

    Hi all,

I purchased a 30 year old car recently. It's on northern plates. Got paperwork and all with it. Checked chassis number with plate on cross member at front.

When I went to clear the car, the girl at the NCT centre wanted to see where the chassis number is stamped on floor beside drivers door(Ford Escort). Anyway, it happens that it's not there due to the floors being replaced and who ever did the work didn't put it back.

Can anyone suggest what my next course of action should be. Can I just get someone to stamp the number in again and if so, who'd be the best person to do it, garage/steel fabricator/????

    Ask any questions

    Thanks

Try to find some pictures online or even physically see one to check for location, depth of stamp, how "straight" the numbers are, etc. This is to try to get the match as close as you can when you stamp.

Are you sure that the chassis No. was stamped on the body? I know someone who had a Cortina cleared recently, and there was NO chassis number on the body, they just went by the plate in front. It appears not all fords have the chassis number stamped on the body.

Thanks. There is a little flap in the carpet where it should be so i assume it should be there

30 years old...so it's a Mk3? Have a check around the engine bay for the number just in case...drivers side chassis rail might be a possibility.
Otherwise I 'd say the location is correct as you say. Have a dig under the paint in case it's been filled over...look under the car for clues. Stamping it back in is the way to go. I had to do that on a Cortina. Big heavy baulk of timber under the floor pan to stamp down on to (jack up the car and lower it in to the timber.

Ford used to stamp the numbers on top of the RHS strut tower / inner wing. They then moved it to the floor under a flap of carpet in the early 80's. I reckon they moved the location as quite a few numbers went missing when the inner wings had the inevitable rust repair carried out.

The floors are painted with that black rust proofing stuff. I had a good scrape at it but nothing visible.

Guess I'll just have to get someone to re stamp it for me......though good knows who do that kinda stuff.

    Might buy the punches myself

Earlier this year, I bought a Capri, which I was suspect of, When I lifted the flap by the drivers seat, there was no number visible. However, I put a wire brush on a drill and cleaned it down to the metal, and bingo, there was the chassis number. It was only then that the seller disclosed that the car had false plates on it. It then transpired that the car had been cleared some years earlier, but never taxed, it was fitted with 1978 plated in order to gat the cheap road tax. I went to the motor tax office and changed the class from private to vintage with the correct reg, number. I would suggest that when it was cleared, the chassis number on the body was not checked! It may come down to who you meet when you go to clear it?

I cleared a 1978 car recently and they looked at the chassis number stamped on the body. I believe Revenue have tightened up the system in recent times and always check the stamped chassis number nowadays.

Engine numbers are also checked on (mostly) modern cars too. I know of cases when the engine number did not match and the car had to be checked with a Garda PSV Officer, and then brought back to the NCT centre for the re-registration process to be completed.
