It says it's a '65 but has a Consul badge which was supposed to have been dropped in '64?

No doubt it says Consul!
Strange alright. In the 2 photos that Capri linked the cars are badged correctly.
Pre-1965 they were known as Ford Consul Cortinas.

Maybe Consul is the French for Cortina :P:P

Think more likely either the bonnet or the badge was changed and nobody noticed

IIRC Renault had une problem with the 5Alpine in the UK because Chrysler/Rootes owned the Alpine name there so Renault had to change it to Gordini for the UK/IRL

There were a lot of subtle changes in the '65. The dash was completely changed along with those you mentioned and also the badging. The pre 65' had Cortina in elongated writing across the keyhole on the bootlid whereas the '65 onwards had it on the RH side as in your pic.
