Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Double deck trams

Looking around Citywest and Saggart there's a whole lot of residential building going on and planning for about another thousand apartments/houses applied for. There's a new town being built in Carrickmines.

Since both Luas lines are already at capacity and we can't go any longer would a double deck tram be an option? The gap between the top of the tram and the pantograph is a huge distance from the tram roof. Why aren't there double deck trams with short pantographs and insulation of the passenger compartment from the electrical system? Or even lifting the cables if there's a reason the pantograph is so long. It would be an easy way to double the capacity and disabled access would still be available on the lower level.

Nobody makes double deck articulated trams and they wouldn't fit under the bridges at Rialto anyway

Double deck buses are nowhere near double the capacity of a single deck of the same length btw. Stairs take a lot out as does the extra exit requirements for more people through the same doors.

At a certain point adding capacity to a line becomes pointless because the consequences of collisions and other disruptions become unacceptable.

Arguably this is already the case with 50m traps without full private right of way and a reluctance to add intersection features to dissuade drivers in particular (but not exclusively) from bad choices.

For me the way to go would be to build new capacity - including retaining Green Line as is, and aligning Metro South towards Terenure.

A double deck tram wouldn't fit under the tunnel at Balally either.
